Lumpy Power Steering When Cold

Hi,

I have a 2004 D4D Avensis and noticed over the last few winters that when starting from cold the power steering would be intermitantly stiff until it had warmed up. Doing a full turn from lock to lock usually sorted it and it was only in the very cold weather however now I'm finding that its doing it more often and taking longer to sort itself out. Does anyone know the cause of this or has the same issue on their cars?

A quick google search reveals some problems with power steering pumps packing up, hydraulic fluid needing a change or even the universal joint to the rack becoming corroded.

Any ideas appreciated, thanks!

Hey this is a common issue that people spend alot of wasted time and money on due bad advice ur power steering belt is slightly too loose .just slackin off nut in centre of the tensioner pulley (14 socket) and turn the adjuster a few turns (12 socket) and and tighten the nut in the centre of the pulley back up .simple diy job .

hi Kev, thanks for the advice. Out of interest why does the temperature affect the problem? I'd have thought a hot belt would be expand and be more loose than on a cold startup, however a slipping belt would certainly explain the dips in the pump pressure.

No probs its due to the thickness of the fluid when cold as its a thin fluid it warms up rapidly

  • 8 years later...

@toyota diag tech 1 you are a legend. I've had power steering issues on and off for a few weeks now and thought I was up for a new pump or steering rack. After a couple of hours browsing the web, I stumbled upon your 8 year old post. The belt didn't cross my mind as I'd always associated a loose belt with a squeeling noise. Tightened the belt slightly and the car is as good as new :). You saved me a trip to the mechanic and all the inconvenience that comes with it!

Kind regards,

David R
