Hi,

My TR is just coming up to its 3rd birthday, had it from new and keeping long term. Its only done 10K in 3 years! Can anyone tell me if the third year service is a major (or is that the 4th?) And moreover at what time / mileage does the cam belt need changing?

Thanks,

Melanie

10K in 3 Years? im guessing its short journeys or it must be your driveway mantle piece

Considering your car is not used much it doesn’t do the motor any good

Your better giving it a check over being 3 years old if your any good at DIY:

Give it fresh Oil with filter

Spark plugs replace - short journeys or infrequent use doesn’t do them any good

Air Filter - inspect if in need replace or clean it

Check coolant and top up if required

Windscreen washer top up

Check wipers may be perished

Check Tyre pressures and condition of rubber

Brake disc and pads wont have wear at 10k but the discs may have corrosion due to not being used much (not a problem if your car is garaged)

Check headlight bulbs and brake bulbs replace if necessary

Cambelt does not need doing as they have a timing chain unless you have a noticeable rattle it does not need no attention

Other than that at 10k you must have a mint car your oil and spark plugs are the primary elements on this service the other items are worth checking over...

Thanks for the above info, i am pretty reasonable at DIY but wont do this. Yes the car is in 'mint' condition (hence keeping it long term) false economy to get rid of now! I will have it serviced by a local garage that I have used on an off for a number of years as it also needs first MOT (I know them well, also to keep the service record upto date). I was a little mystified though, as I was led to believe that it had a timing belt yet you say the 1.6 valvematic with optimal drive has a chain. A recent flyer from the local toyota dealership advertises Auris/ Corolla/Urban Cruiser - belts from £289! - is this just for earlier models than the 2009 model?

Unless somebody can verify if it is a belt or chain? if not call your main dealer and they can 100% it for you.

I know most modern Toyotas are chain driven hence why I say it.

1ZR-FE Is your engine code -

Can imagine it will pass the MOT with flying colours at 10k, mine is on 70k and has passed two MOTs without any advisories.

Only current models with timing belts are Landcruiser and hilux with KD engine. The last petrol with a timing belt was the A and E engines found in old corolla avensis starlet carina. All petrols went to chains about 2000 on.

Don't you have a manual? Since you have it from new, they arrive with a manual and a guarantee book which states when and what should be checked/replaced.
