Rusty Front Brake Calliper

Hi Guys, I test drove an Auris today and found it a really nice drive so decided to go with it and put down a holding deposit. I now have a concern because the front brake callipers were completely covered in rust. Is this normal for an Auris only 5 years old?

I have a 2010 auris and before i painted them they were already starting to get rusty,so i wouldnt be that surprised at that age, many other cars would be the same not just the auris, they are just steel and the rain and winter salt can really attack them as you cant really get in to wash them off,

As long as they worked well and there wazs no squeling or scraping then i think it should be ok apart from they dont look that pretty to look at.

There was a tiny bit of squeliling, but I put that down to the car being sat on the forecourt for a few weeks?

The brakes can be a bit noisy after being left for a while escpecially if they have been wet which im sure they have even if they washed it.

I would rather look at the disc and pads if you can see them, you want the disc to be nice and smooth on the faces and a good bit of material left on the pad youll only see the front one but it would give you a good indication of wear.

The rusty caliper would only be a problem if worst case it had rusted down the side of the piston and would start weeping fluid, but im sure its only surface rusting which cant really be helped unless theyve been painted from reasonably new, hardly ever done though.

The garage also im sure should have given the car a check over before selling.

So its not a reason not to go ahead with the purchase then? Would you say that this is just a Toyota problem or would it be the same with any make/vehicle? Its just a bit annoying being that the alloys mean that it is always on show making the wheels look a bit ugly :(

Id say there if thats all you found wrong with the car then, i would say theres no reason not to buy it,but its your money,so your decision in the end.

Ive had a few different makes ands its not just toyota they are all similar, they will all rust because they are just steel, some have a gold coloured look from new,but that doesnt protect them at all i think.

I painted mine recently with hammerite always do on the calipers and that can tidy them up even if you go black, and hammerite can go directly onto rust so just need a wire brush and a couple of coats of hammerite, better than new when finished.

Thanks guys,

There were also some minor scratches in the paintwork but the dealer said he would take care of these and replace two rusty wheel nuts. The car has only done 23k miles and I managed to cut a pretty good deal for it, but still having doubts, just wondering whether if I looked at a number of Auris' from this year they'd all look the same anyway?

I wouldnt worry about it too much to be honest, if its been standing for a while then that would explain it.

Mention it to the dealer - they could get someone to attack them with a wire brush!

Nice job Phil, i've done both my Avensis and Yaris with black smooth Hammerite before they get too bad, in fact the Avensis has been done 2 years and is still perfect.

I like the colour of your alloys, did you do them yourself and what colour is it as I fancy doing the Avensis alloys a darker grey instead of silver as I think it would look good with Decuma grey bodywork.

Regards ..... Pete.

Thanks pete, ive tried a lot of different paints including high temperature caliper paint, but cant beat hammerite,it does last a lot longer if you can catch them before they get to bad.

I got the wheels second hand and took them to my local powdercoaters to get finished in that colour, they called it dark anthracite, but each place might call it a different name.

I liked it because it has a lot of metallic flake in it so really sparkles bright in the sun.

It would look good with the decuma grey,i really like that colour on a car, some how makes the car look more expensive and sleek.
