Hi engine management light came on about 3 months ago brought it to MR T.

should mention its a 1.8 petrol oil burner with 115000 miles on it .

Mr T says its the catalytic converter and will cost about a thousand euro to fix.

They said they could not reset the fault bad news for me as i had my NCT comeing up during the week .

So i disconnected the Battery and done my NCT which the car passed thought it might fail on emissions.

So my question is what damage am i doing by driving with the light now back on .

Any information would be appreciated.

theirs is no drop in power or mpg .

What code???

If it's P0420 then at that mileage it is more than likely the catalytic converter in the manilfold (Maniverter). There is an ECU modification that changes the detection logic for P0420. This is an ECU swap as a FLASH is not available on the 8-bit older ECUs.

I would advise replacing the maniverter but only after you've rectified the 'oil burner' problem as the burnt oil gums up the maniverter. If you drive with the light on you will damage the CAT further which is academic now and use more fuel as it won't be operating in closed loop.

You will not know if the OBD picks up another fault however.

Hi jack thanks for your reply yes the fault code was p0420.

Pity MR T in ireland was not has helpful as your self all they seem to want is the cash 1000 euro .

As for the oil burner i think its a short block replacement is required which MR T said about 1300 .

Plus clutch is starting to shudder when pulling off in first and a service is due which i know im going to need brakes front and back and 2 discs on the front .Its staring to sound like a bit of a money pity will think what to do i.e. sell it on .

Shame car has never let me down in 5 years of having it .

Thanks once again for yur reply .

No problem. If you decide to keep it, an OptiFit short motor is not the only option. Improved pistons and rings are available which works out cheaper depending on the labour rate of the shop you use.
