Hello RAVers,

I am preparing myself for a big service maintenance (150 000kms). In the Maintenance schedule stands, that i have to change also the Rear Diff oil. There stands it should be API GL-5 SAE 90.

but on the internet i have found, that these oils are also marked as SAE xW-Y.

In my case i think it is SAE xW-90, but which should be the "x" - winter value? 75W, or 85W or it doesn't matter or the lower the better, or.... i am really confused

i have found these on ebay: API GL-5 SAE 90 hypoid

can anyone help me?

thanks a lot! :help2:

If your vehicle was produced before 2009, the oil should be GL5 80W/90 Hypoid.

The specifications are pinned at the top of the RAV page (service data sheets).

Thanks Ravman,

i have checked it before i had asked. there stands only API GL-5 SAE 90.

BTW, i have dilema which Engine coolant should I use. there is an S-LLC now, i need to replace it with new one. Should i use LLC, or again S-LLC?

Thanks again.

My RAV is 2006 model.

You are OK to use GL5 80W/90 Hypoid in the rear axle.

I would take the advice of Toyota in which coolant to buy.

thanks for advice, i will buy it. B)

EDIT:

new confusion: every 60 000 kms - should i change a rear differential oil (0,51L) AND transfer oil (0,45L) too?

i have seen the SDS (06-09). there are three pictures for ALA version:

1. GEARBOX

2. TRANSFER OIL (or also called middle diff)

3. REAR DIFF

Am I right?

So for both - transfer oil and rear diff it is the same oil?

why the rear diff oil need to be changed so often? i understand why the transfer (mid diff), but rear??

The transfer and gear oil should be changed every 2 years or 32k kms. The rear diff also has the clutch unit for the 4WD and you will find the oil drains out very dirty from the wear debris. The transfer box oil will look clean. The gearbox oil need only be checked at this interval with the oil being used for life. However, I will probably change mine at maybe 80-100k kms or 5-6 years. You MUST use the genuine 75 grade oil from Toyota and be very wary of equivalents. I think only Fuchs and Chevron do the same oil. There is a diff and some very fancy metals and plastics inside and the wrong oil could prove expensive. Do not use MT75 oil for Ford and I would not use Redline 75 despite the claims.

Transfer and diff same oil.
