Turbo Conversion?

Recommended Posts

Bit of a random thought but just discovered this company http://www.c1gti.co.uk/ that fit old golf gti turbo's to 1.0 c1's and wondered, as it's the same lump, if this would ever work on an iQ?? Thanks,

Corey

It may be best to ask the company. If it is the same engine then it should fit fine with maybe a few tweaks.

Might look into it, only problem is i can't afford it yet, but planning for the future cant hurt! :P

Sorry but fitting a turbo from a 1.8 litre onto a 1 litre (even a 1.3 litre) would be pretty laggy as trying to build up the exhaust gasses to spin the exhaust wheel would take forever!

Would like a test drive before going down that route. Maybe take the C1 out for a drive first then buying that would be a better option.

I must agree with the need of a test drive of the one for sale

& possibly buying that one as a sensible solution to your need for speed and the small engine without spending loads on your iQ.

They say that one weighed in at 790kg stripped out before the conversion.

A 1.0 iQ is 845 kg Kerb weight & 1210 kg Gross vehicle weight (that includes a driver)

A fair amount of stripping of an iQ and plenty of cash will be required to get similar performance.

(Not that much really that can be stripped to lighten an iQ).

PS Just read the Article on it in EVO Magazine.

no. 164 'car of the year' edition

here is a little bit of what it says.

' I'd recommend going for the full 110bhp. It makes a much more noticeable difference than the 96bhp upgrade and really brings the C1 alive.

The spool-up is very gradual so you will still need to rev the 998cc engine hard and it's not stupendously quick, but the rewards are there.

It sounds great too, with a ripping air noise like a baby Megane (or even 911) turbo, an undertone of three-cylinder warble and a comedy PING like a bicycle bell as what you imagine must be a miniture dump-valve deploys.'

I am sure now that you would need to drive one before even thinking about it.

Probably better to spend the money on a proper quick car and the insurance might be cheaper buying something that is unmodified. JMHO obviously.

I wonder if it can do the claimed 0-60,

cant see it with a turbo and water injection and as EVO says,

"The spool up is very gradual", but if it can, then thats maybe it,

the article says ('0-60 mph 7.9sec claimed) Top Speed 125mph (est)

The times achieved on the track in the C1 GTi site look OK,

but the smaller size and weight need taking into account when thinking about doing similar to a heavier iQ..

a lightened iQ3 might do the same times with a slight bit of tuning, & would be more reliable probably.

My 1.0 multi drive does 112mph without a Turbo. Accelerates from 80 -112mph in S mode. Obviously on the straight.

Will look into it slowly, reckon there'd be better alternatives, I'm with my iQ for the long run so will see what happens over time, speed isn't a terrible issue, she's quite nippy really!! :D Wouldn't mind getting a test drive in the 107 just to feel the lag!

Going to focus on cosmetic bits for now, such as painting those 4 lovely brake callipers yellow!!

P.S: Has anyone uprated their exhausts yet?

(im a bit of a chav at heart :P)

Only one thing in making a 1.0Lt iQ do over 100 mph. If caught, would it not be an instant ban? Cameras seem to be everywhere these days too.
