Yaris Rear Wheel Bearings

Hi all, I'm a new member and need some advice. My brother and I both drive Yaris. His is only three years old, bought new, and 28,000 miles. He's just had to have both rear wheel bearings replaced and the old ones were very badly rusted. I'm waiting for Toyota Head Office to come back to me on this but I thought some of you old hands would be able to help. His car is one week outside the three year warranty, by the way, so he's had to shoulder the entire cost himself. Is it normal for these bearings to fail at such low mileage? It seems a bit strange that both sides should fail at exactly the same time. Your thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Mohammad Salim.

Welcome Mohammad

Most unusual for both to fail.

If the car has had regular Toyota services - has it? - I would expect Toyota to replace both free of charge..

Yeah, I thought they'd have a grace period after the warranty runs out to catch stuff like this...?

But that doesn't sound normal at all...

Sounds like the backend got parked in the sea for a few minutes. Is anything else looking rustier than might be expected?

If it has a towbar,it may have been used for boats = immersion in sea.

Mine had to have the OSR bearing changed in 2010 at about 21,000 miles, car just two months shy of being two years old

But yeah having to replace both bearings at the same time does seem a bit odd

HI,MY WIFES YARIS 1.4 D4D 2008 (08), 26,000 ON THE CLOCK,BOTH REAR BEARINGS TOTALLY SHOT, I NEVER HAD BEARINGS FEEL LIKE THIS ON ANY CAR, VERY GRITTY TO TURN , AND IT FELT AS THOUGH THERE WAS A LACK OF GREASE INSIDE?.REPLACED BY ONES MADE BY BILLSTEIN GROUP,£176 FOR PAIR.TOYOTA (WHO DID NOT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FAILURE) WERE KIND ENOUGH TO QUOTE ME £192+ VAT PER SIDE FOR PARTS.

OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A PROBLEM SOMEWHERE IN THE ASSEMBLY OF THE HUB UNIT POSSIBLY A FAULTY SEAL LETTING WATER PAST AND WASHING THE LUBRICANT OUT,WHWN I GET TIME I WILL STRIP HUB AND POST RESULT

I am the owner of a Yaris D4D just 4 year old at the end of January.

I had to have the rear right bearing replaced in 2011 and now there is a bearing away again,I'm not sure if its the right or left yet but tis shouldn't be happening to a Reliable!! car like Toyota.

Toyota complaints department didn't want to know.

Not good customer service.

You should ask your toyota dealer about a possible warranty extension on the rear wheel bearings of a 2nd gen yaris ;)
