Auto Diesel

HI

Not been on much lately but the 4.2 has been perfect. New Battery and usual services that's all.

My son hurt his back and I suggested driving an auto would be beneficial. he's borrowed the 4.2, it helps his back a lot so he wants to buy it off me . Can't really say no can I.

The 4.2 I like because it's got plenty of room in back with seats out (lots of beehives) and will readily drive along rough tracks and over fields to said hives. Also plenty of headroom in front.

So, will the diesel auto do what the 4.2 does but better?

Not seen much about the auto on here but I do remember when it came out Anchorman said he would like one but not with that engine!

so, is the autobox smooth and reliable, and, is the engine prone to failure like some of the others?

Pushing the boat out to £20k will get me a 2010 Rav.4.2 auto diesel.

For £20k I can get a 2011 Kia Sorrento with balance of 7 year warranty.

For £8k I can get another Petrol 4.2 auto XTR (I like the cruise control).

What do you think?

Regards

Peter

Slightly confused on your question personally.

Are you talking about getting a RAV4.2 Diesel with Auto? I don't think Toyota did one, and the Auto was quite late to come to the Diesel 4.3 as well.

I have the RAV4.3 2.2 150BHP (which came out in 2010 I think) with Auto transmission and the change is sublime - cannot feel any changes. I guess it is a bit like you would imagine a CVT Auto SHOULD be but never has been.

The RAV4.2s are pretty bullet-proof and the savings you would make from less depreciation would cover any extra costs from running the old car I would think.

If the RAV4.2 suited you and you don't fancy a change of model just for the sake of change (and nothing wrong wth that!), why not stick to the RAV4.2 and go for the XT5 for a touch more luxury :D

Sorry, would be 4.3 auto diesel.

Essentially if the 4.3 auto diesel is "good" I'll probably get one. Balance of 5 year warranty appeals.

I suppose it's about value if I spend £20k. this or Sorrento?

Only yesterday I test drove a 2004 4.2 Petrol Automatic Rav on behalf of a neighbour, and was totally gobsmacked at how smooth the gear change was,and how responsive it was when warmed up and the autobox kicked down. If you are not doing high enough mileages to merit a diesel, there seem to be plenty 4.2 petrol Ravs with good service history at ONE THIRD your intended outlay.

As you say though, the cushion of some warranty still to run is good, but a bit of a price unless you just fancy a real upgrade.

Aesthetically speaking, I find the Sorrento both as dated looking as SOME say the Rav has become, but something in the bodywork / paintwork finish makes them look "tired" very quickly.

second to big kev as i had an 2001 4.2 5drs auto and swmbo still has her (still in the bodyshop) 2003 4.2 3drs auto and they are just good cars.

now i have a 2005 sorento simply because i needed to tow a 2600kg boat. if not i would still be driving the 5drs!

i have also driven an 61 plate rav4 (insurance courtesy car with 3500 miles on odo) diesel auto and are not that impressed for what you get for the money (feels like a cheap car to me but that might be just me).

The only thing that ever gave me reservations about the 2010 auto was the D-CAT system and what it might do to the fuel consumption. I believe it would give absolutely no technical problems especially as the 150 engine is a gem. If you are looking at a diesel auto you must try the RAV. It is an astonishing engine and box and if I could justify the extra outlay (I can't really justify the extravagent toy I run now!) I would have the auto without hesitation.

Go and try one but be warned, you WILL buy it.

Well I drove one today and as ever you are right. i didn't buy one though. The engine and auto box are very good, smooth changes, responsive quiet engine. The steering and cornering are in a different league to my 4.2. However, the bumps all still jar, as a main car not sure I could live with this.

I then drove a Tiguan. Better size than Rav, lift up rear door and a SPARE WHEEL (spacesaver). But the engine is like a tractor compared to Rav. mpg is better though.

A few days ago I drove a Kia Sorrento. No way would I buy this. Too big, slow, very poor suspension, poor interior, The 192bhp makes no difference as it is so heavy. BHP per tonne is actually similar to RAV.

Problem is there is a new Honda coming out at end of year and a new Rav early next year. I'm sure their mpg's will e up there with Tiggvan. As this project has now moved to replacing another car and consolidating to one vehicle I'm minded to wait until new Rav is out.

I think Your decision to wait is a very good one... Current Rav needs one heck of an upgrade to bring it up to modern standards....

I like the current auto box as its smooth and slick. But the engine just seems to struggle. The economy is ridiculous for a 2012 car but then its underpinnings go back to late 2005...

I found the ride on the 2012 SR to be very hard and course .. Far harder and noisier than My old 2006 T180 but then I suppose its worn in a little...

Out of the current crop I have to say the Ford comes out best for Me but its just too small behind the rear seats....

Cmon MrT. Get yer finger out !!!

When I had my Verso serviced last month the sales manager told me they are desperate for the new Rav to arrive. It would seem that they are losing customers because they can't "upgrade" their current Rav.

Plutus, did you try the SR version? The ride quality is far more compliant on the XTR

yes it was the SR. That's all they had.

The local VW dealer quoted me 5 months lead time on a new Tiggyvan. Apparently they can't make DSG gearboxes fast enough.
