Avensis 1.8 W Mot Emissions Failure

Hi there

Looking for some advice on the above. My w plate avensis has failed the emissions test for the MOT and car is still agood runner and bodywork is great so seems a shame to scrap it. I have read some posts from others that state they have solved the problem with engine cleaners etc but this has been done and still failed.

I am a novice when it comes to these things but my readings for the test were:

fast idle test

engine speed 2500-3000 rpm manual check pass

CO <=0.300% 0.649% fail

HC <=200 ppm 135 ppm pass

lambda 0.970-1.030 1050 fail

fast idle test le test fail

engine speed 2500-3000 rpm manual check pass

CO <=0.300% 0.813% fail

HC <=200 ppm 110 ppm pass

lambda 0.970-1.033 1.033 fail

natural idle test

engine speed 450-1500 rpm manual check pass

CO <=0.500% 0.744% fail

overall result: exhaust emissions test - failed

I have already spent some money on it with tyres etc and engine cleanout therefore can anyone advise with test results shown is there any possible remedy to resolve this or do I have to bite the bullet and scrap the car?

Thanks

Stephen

Welcome to TOC...

Looks like you'll have to change the lambda... Have you pluged it into a fault code reader to find out for sure? Get some V-Power petrol in it and a tin of BG44... That will help alot I recon

Hello mate, change the air filter if you haven't already done so, get the car really hot and take the car for a fast but safe drive using the lower gears at over 3000 revs. Do this a couple of times and again just before the re-test, make sure you get a "while you wait" MOT because all they will do is leave the car idling to warm up and this can lead to the results your car failed on.

This is your cheapest option but you can include Mistermenas advice with the Additive.

regards Pete.

  • 4 weeks later...

Mine failed emmissions (can't find results sorry) last year. Before going down the sensor path i used Cataclean and did a few miles at high RPM / low gear on the motorway - went through no probs after that!

cheers

Lookin at your results even though your the hydro carbons passed they are still relatively high compared to a gud car . Taking this and your high co into account this would point to catalyst failure and would also give a high lambda reading .does your vehicle consume much oil? .try disconnecting your Battery overnight to reset your fuel trim calculation in the ecu and put a bg 44k into your tank and take the car up the motorway then test your emissions .this may squueze you through but lookin at your results id imagine theres a hole in the honeycomb of your cat.

Hi there

I have had mine failing an emissions test and all I do is buy stuff called CATACLEAN, 470mm bottle and pour it into your tank together with just 15litres of petrol or diesel depending on fuel type, then drive it at at close motorway speed for about 15 -20 minutes then you will be ready for good pass on emmisions. THis stuff cleans your lamda sensor and the Cat. It roughly about £13- £18 on e-bay.

Good luck.
