Eml Engine Managament Light

Hello to all

I have an EML (engine management light) problem with my Toyota Avensis Verso GLS VVTi 2.0L petrol engine (engine type: 1AZ FE). The car is running smoothly, no jerking, but sometime the idling is different when I stop, its like going to shut off the engine but its not, otherwise running perfect & I still using it, since a year a ago when the EML turned on.

Just now I have a friend that check the EML and diagnose it with the electronic gadget thing he plug-in under the driver seat. The code appear P1155. Can anyone help me to what kind of sensor I need to replace this? Code P1155 meaning- A/F Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor 1).

What parts do I need to buy?

Thanks in advance

Rob

Well OK I will share the solution....

The P1155 code fault is the lambda sensor at bank 2, sensor 1, is located before the catalyst which is already busted! So just replaced the faulty sensor with the new Denso Lambda sensor(Part# DOX-0246) using 22mm wrench, WD40(spray it to removed the faulty sensor), copper grease(apply to the tread of the new sensor). Then reset the ECU & A/F by removing fuse for 5 secs, put it back. Start the engine! and walla! the Engine Management Light (EML) is GONE!

Hope this help to all who have a problem in P1155 fault code of your Toyota Avensis Verso.

Thank you for viewing

Yes it is gone forever!!!!!! Maybe your local garage didn't change at all your lambda sensor? They might just reset the ECU,yes it will disappear for a while and it will come back after maybe 100miles. Coz I've already done this.

My advice is to change it man! You can put it by yourself. BUY the Denso or Toyota Brand NOT the cheap ones.

Hi Jim,

What is your situation right now? Is the light still on or how did you get rid of it? Over a period of 1 year I have had all 4 O2 sensors changed. The last one was changed yesterday, drove around ok but today the light came back on again. Once this came back on, the petrol consumption doubled!! Yesterday the technician plugged the car into a number of machines and concluded that all sensors were performing ok. He said he suspected that the software in the car which controls the functioning of the sensors needs updating/upgrading by TOYOTA. Is this true? Has anyone had this done? He said he did not want to change the sensor because he believed it was ok despite the reading saying Bank 2 sensor 1 was faulty. I suggested that we changed the sensor, so my faullt really. Can anyone help, pleaseee!! Thanks

Frustrated Toyota Owner.

HI Rob,

How do you determine which engine you have. I have seen lots(Model 3ZZ-FE, 1ZZ-FE, 1AZ-FE , 1AZ-FSE and 1CD-FTV & Type 3ZZ-FE, 1ZZ-FE, 1AZ-FE and 1AZ-FSE engines. I have Avensis T-Spirit, 2003, 2.0L, automatic transmission, petrol.

Also how do I reset the ECU? Where is the fuse located? Not quite clear on the diagram, is it the OBD2(On-board diagnosis system) fuse or the A/F(multiport fuel injection system /sequential multiport fuel injection system)? Or where is it? Does disconnecting the Battery reset anything?

Sorry about too many questions but I am just lost at the moment.

Many thanks!

Hi Prof,

I changed my car!

Local garage changed catalytic converter to get emission pass for MOT. EML light came on (was never on before) they changed sensor - light on - changed sensor etc...Upshot EML was still on so I bought an OBD2 code reader and it showed cat fault (I think they changed wrong cat). I had no running or consumption problems (ave 36mpg) so just used code reader to clear fault code and extinguish the EML.

If you are near Fife you can borrow the code reader to check for yourself. Once you get the code(s) there is lots of info on net as to actions to take.

I don't know anything about software upgrades, sorry.

BTW I managed to get some cash back via Barclaycard from that garage.

Thanks Jim,

Unfortunately, I am in West London but thanks for offering to lend yours. I will have a look on the net for an OBD2 reader and see whether I can get one. I have seen some for about £70 + VAT, what is your make and where did you purchase it from?

Many thanks!

I got the Autel MS309 for less than £30 on eBay. I'm sure there are others that will also do the job. Main functions for me were read the code, clear the code and clear the EML.

Hi Jim,

I hope you are well. I am updating you as promised. I finally took delivery of the code reader today after a very long period after ordering it. Between my last posting and today, the EML will come on for a few days then go off for a few days and then come on again. It has been on the whole of this week. I plugged the reader into the DLC and got the following 2 error codes:

P0136 Generic, Bank 1 Sensor 2

P0156 Generic, Bank 2 Sensor 2

Funny thing is, I had Bank 2 Sensor 2 changed in Feb 2011 and just over a year later it is gone! Is that normal? I am not sure which sensor is which. As I lift the bonnet and stand facing the front of the car, I can see two sensors(one short, one long) to my left and two(one short, one long) to my right. Question is, which one is which? Where is Bank 1 sensor 1, bank 1 sensor 2, Bank 2 sensor 1, Bank 2 sensor 2? I also have the view from the freeze frame data, will that be any good?

I wait for help. Many thanks.

Prof

Seems to me the sensors on the Avensis are very delicate. I'd had my 2005 Avensis (petrol, 40k miles) 2 weeks when the EML light came on. First off the garage (Toyota dealership) reset it. 2 weeks later, back on, so they changed a sensor, 2 weeks later, back on again etc. First off they said it was because I was doing a fair amount of short journeys, and the car had to get used to my driving? (!) Anyway, the upshot was I had all four sensors changed over the period of about 3 months, AND a new ECU unit put in (all under warrenty thankfully). That solved the problem for about 6 months, then darn me if the ruddy light didn't came back on again.

That issue combines with others (needed a new radiator ; garage installed it, but failed to fit the bottom hose properly, resulting in me breaking down on the motorway with total coolant loss), plus the attitude of the dealership, (when I said I was unhappy with the amount of issues the car had, the answer was 'well thats what the warrently is for') meant that after just under a year of ownership, I got rid. I'm afraid that bad experience has meant I am unlikely to ever consider a Toyota again.

I just bought the,

U480 Car Auto Diagnostic Scanner tool OBD2 OBDII EOBDII

on eBay for the princely sum of £16.99 inc delivery....... Will post on here if it's up to the job! Half the price that my local garage would charge for 1 fault read!!!!!!!!!

Well my scanner arrived today, really fast despatch and delivery. I've just used it and not surprised to find fault code "p0155 o2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (bank 2 sensor 1)"

The tool itself was very simple to use, very fast and the guide book comes with a very comprehensive faults list. Well impressed and it was £13 cheaper than a single fault read at my local garage and almost £50 quid cheaper than having it checked at my nearest Toyota dealer! :D
