Rav4.2 Knocking Exhaust, Help.

Hi

The RAV4's exhaust has started to knock a little more than usual. Normally it knocks if you get the revs wrong and it almost dies during a gearchange - like any car does. Now it is starting to knock over severe bumps and potholes.

I've been underneath, and the contact point appears to be just after the backbox before the 90 degree bend and exit to the outside world.

The figure 8 bushing in that area won't win any beauty contests as it looks old, but is not damaged , detached or torn.

Here is the contact point. Am I missing something rubber here? Is the exhaust sitting a little high? Should I just replace the nearby figure 8 bushing?

Thanks

How solid is the rubber bushing? If it's gone soft you can get quite a bit of play.

Are there any donut rubbers missing from hooks attached to the exhaust? Any signs of distortion to the exhaust. Are you sure it's the exhaust?

Sorry a bit vague but not familiar with your model Bob

I would be inclined to go to a Toyota Dealer and had a look under the same Engined model as yours to compare.

Where you have indicated with the arrow does look like a possible contact& rattle point as so close. and if the rubber support is now 12 odd years old, could well be no longer performing as it should and needs a replacement.

Would not a tyre/exhaust fitting supplier be cheaper to consult ?

I have found in the past that the indies give good service and advice.

If it is as suggested by DavRav I would expect them to carry such items

Exhaust fitter would have the knowledge :) They may want to get it on a ramp and then sell a new exhaust

My suggestion was not to PAY Toyota to have a look, but simply crawl underneath some of their used car stock to get a visual comparision ;)

  • 3 months later...

Well I replaced the exhaust mounts, Toyota wanted something ridiculous like £30 each and it needed 4, so I got Bosal 255-170 * 4 for £3 each from Mick's Garage.

The new mounts actually pulled the exhaust closer and it rattled like hell, so in the end I unbolted that bracket for the back step and took the corner off that strikes the exhaust just by the arrow with a hacksaw. it's 1/4" thick steel plate so plenty sturdy enough. Doesn't knock at all now, and never will again. Very pleased, even with these skinned knuckles. :D
