Toyota Rav4 GX auto. 1997 5 door 93000 miles

Owned car for 12 years and have full service history at local garage

Help!

When steering full lock has been a slight rumble/grinding sound for some time.

Took to local garage who put new belts on power steering

also cleaned engine, repaired an oil leak and had full service.

Grinding sound now much worse and occurs while steering left and right in low speed also occurs a little while driving forward in straight line.

No grinding sound when vehicle is stationary.

Garage say they not know what is wrong.

Please help.

Have you had a look at your brakes pads/disks?

CV joint on the driveshaft?

Had all brakes pads/disks renewed 18 months ago these were also looked at in service. Although i have heard this can cause a similar noise, this has already been ruled out.

Thanks

When steering full lock has been a slight rumble/grinding sound for some time.-->>>

Check with either CV joints or wheel bearing, subject there is nothing between caliper and pad

Took to local garage who put new belts on power steering -- >>>

why?? what was the issue with them???

, repaired an oil leak and had full service. Grinding sound now much worse and occurs while steering left and right

CHECK WITH POWER STEERING OIL PUMP BEARINGS !!!!! OR AN ACTUATOR THAT TURNS THE WHEELS

Thanks for suggestions i will check it out.

Power steering belts replacement prob my own fault as i told garage i had a problem with the power steering.

Also wondering if this problem could be caused through low level lubricant in rear diff.

Would be most greatfull for any opinions on this.

the belt could be overtightened leading to the pump bearings fast wear down

as visible this abnormal sound is heard under load -- check all parts responsible for movement. may be you have a minor issue with bolt tightness or so

Makes no noise when stationary steering. also makes no noise ( with no load )on ramp.

As suggested previously, have you had the CV joints checked as yet?

my guess would be power steering pump has gave up, prob belts changed because of oil saturation from seals in pump leaking or burst pipe. either the pump has been run light of oil or has just packed in due to wear and tear. Did the steering ever get heavy?. When you say it doesnt grind when stationary, can you say the same if turning the steering from left to right if so its not the steering pump

Steering not heavy. no change left to right. full lock left bad, full lock right makes noise but not so bad.

Belts not realy an issue.

It does sound like the pump the way you describe it eaglebloke, dont think the pressure relief valves would be that noisey,if it is it wont be too long before its really rattling or steering starts to feel heavy. All you can do for now is drive it on or have it replaced. It probably sounds worse now that the new belts are on and tensioned that bit more than the old ones. It could suprise you how long the old one could last in present condition after all it is a toyota.
