Thinking of having mine done.....

Any idea how much this costs ?

Mine are blistered where balancing weights used to be and a few places around the ' spokes '.

Have already emailed a few companies locally.

I would expect £50 to £100 per wheel.

It is actually meant to be fairly easy to do yourself depending on if there is much remedial work needed. I did have a little go on the 306s wheels couple of years ago and had a little success but those had too much damage for diy.

Hi Jamie,

I got both our RAVs' wheels done about 6 months ago. Full refurb, all 5 wheels, stripped to bare metal, powder coated, guaranteed for 12 months with The Wheel Specialists in Burton on Trent but they have branches nationally: http://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk

£420 complete per car. Excellent finish & service. Can't recommend them highly enough. Choice of finish. Long, long list of positive feedbacks. So good that I go to them for my tyres now as well despite them being about 50 miles away.

Give them a call. They are really very good.

Hi

I was looking arround last year and came across this company that looked very good.

http://www.wheelrefurbishing.com/pricelist.htm

I have not yet done business with them but they seem helpful and quoted me just under £200 for 4 wheels.

I am sure you can find a more local company for roughly the same price.

Also local powder coating companies offer wheel refurbishment, however the cost depends on the number of wheels they are refinishing at a time.

Good grief Jamesy...did you opt for Gold Leaf adhered by molten titanium....? Even if that price was for five rims, seems a dod sore....?

Hi Kev,

If you ask Mr.T for a new alloy for a RAV, it comes to about £350. £85 per wheel looks a good deal to me. Also these guys strip the wheel completely so that any faults can be spotted beforehand - nothing worse than refurbing a wheel that's already nearly knackered. Lots of other companies, especialiiy the mobile ones who come to you, only do the basic cosmetic stuff which generally doesn't last and will degrade relatively quickly. Ours were doen last September & they still look as good now as when I drove out of the shop.

The driver for me was the safety issue. The biggest risk with corroding alloys is the danger of pressure loss. A little bit over time isn't necessarily a big deal but if it lets go on the m-way at 80 mph or so, well, how much do you value your peace of mind?

At the end of the day, you get what you pay for.

To be fair, Jim, I am reminded that Wicked Wheels did ma wife's Merc alloys all of 10 years ago (getting forgetful, Tommy....) Then it was £50.00...they were shotblasted, repainted with a mega coat of ally paint, oven dried and top coated with a UV Varnish...saw the car six years later (wee wummin driver) and with exception of mega kerbing, actual paint finish still sound. £85.00 after all this time is aboot richt.

Jamie.. Give Redditch powder coating a ring.. I had some kerbed 19 inch Audi wheels done there. They strip the old coatings off and repair the rims and powdercoat which is a far superior finish to paint....

My wheels were £40 quid each but bear in mind there was no damage other than light kerbing..

You will have to get the wheels to them of course but its worth the effort for the quality and great finish..

PM Me and I will look up the number and give You the details of the right guy to speak to as I know him quite well.....

I had some BSA Gold Star motorcycle wheel rims done with Silver powder coating when I restored it 30 years ago.

The plan was to eventually buy and fit new chrome rims, but you know what happens to plans !

They looked fantastic until after a few years of washing etc, all the Silver disappeared and now they are just a Grey colour.

Maybe the powder has been improved since mine were done ?

Phil. With powdercoating its not so much how its changed but how well its done.. I have had literally dozens of wheels of bikes powdercoated over the Years.. Several sets of car wheels also...

This wheel is from My XF.. I kerbed it so a minor repair, Complete strip and poerdercoat was in order...

JaguarXFWheels020.jpg

Front wheel from My old KTM RC8.. Both wheels stripped and powdercoated.. Machesini stickers replaced and lacquered over..

mondeo020.jpg

Rear wheel

2008KTMRC8003.jpg

This is one of four I had done on My old Audi..

Picture187.jpg

Front wheel from the race bike.

Picture161.jpg

Front wheel from My old ZZR1400

Picture096.jpg

All the wheels had the following.... Complete strip.. Ultra sonic crack testing.. Any kerbing damage skimmed out and the wheels dynamically balanced before the hot powerdercoating process is carried out.....

All the many wheels I have had done was by Redditch Powder Coating.. They are IMHO one of the best in the country.. Paul the owner is a biker and is an extremely conscientiousness guy so No wheel or any other item that is coated leaves the depot until a Very high quality finish is achieved...

Powdercoating is many times thicker than spray painting and the durability is exceptional...

If anyone here ever needs wheels refurbed or any other items powdercoated PM Me and I will happily have a word in Pauls Shell like and make sure the job gets done to the highest standard and at proper rates..

Mail order work is no problem but different colours are done on different days so timing is essential.. IE Silver is done on Wednesdays so wheels would have to be with them on Monday so stripping ect would be done on Tuesday Coating wednesday.. Cooling overnight and sent back out on thursday by courier so back on Friday...

A car wheel stripped. Repaired. Checked on the balancer before coating and the coated in silver typically costs arond 55 to 60 quid.... HTH..

Charlie.

How well does it match an original wheel?

I've got a kirbed one but I can hardly see it so I'm going to have a go at painting it first but its worth knowing for future.

Stonkingly good price Charlie, and similar to Don, I would be interested in colour(s) of silver available. The Wicked Wheels guy 10 years ago let me pick a slightly more subtle silver of the three he could offer, which came out superb and not quite so bright as your blue Audi A4 ones. I have 2 in garage that need the full bhoona job.

Getting a perfect match is a bit of a lottery... With the Jag wheel the picture was to show the quality of Paul's work..

Me being ultra fussy I ended up getting a brand new wheel anyway.. The colour was close and most would not have even noticed but as I said I am really fussy...

I always recommend doing two wheels at least as then they can be fitted to one side of the car and all is well.. Mostly though with refurbishment work its a case of customers having all four done at the same time and this of course gives the best results..

Do not be put off by My fussiness though and most are happy with the colour results.. I am as usual being pedantic...

Kev.. Silver is as said done on a Wednesday.. Not every batch comes out exactly the same colour.. This is despite using the same silver powder that is sprayed onto the wheels and then baked....

If a powder is sprayed on very slightly thicker than last weeks batch or for some reason the duration of the baking time differs slightly then the colour may vary.. When I say vary I am talking very very slight indeed...

This is the case with all powder coating.. Paul would explain far better than I !! He is very honest and open. If He feels He cannot deliver what You want he will tell You so.....

In honesty if its just one wheel and a perfect match is essential the painting may be the best option.. There are less variables with spray painting and re doing if its not right first time is easier than with powdercoating....

hi Charlie,

Do you know what his turnaround time would be for a single wheel? Is it possible for him to do a 'while you wait' service? In these days of spare savers, it is a real pain to time a wheel repair :(

Cheers Charlie. I thought while you wait would be pushing it for a proper result.

Got a possible week window at start of july (inheritated kerbed alloy on the swift that is spoiling the overall appearance a bit)

Just had mine done (along with the removal of the BSR). Mine have been sandblasted, a high build primer applied, basecoat, and 2 coats of laquer.

A couple of tiny bubble holes in some of the corners if you look really really close, but look really good now. Very pleased, amazing how much better the vehicle looks.
