Wheel Noise

Hi guys,

Yesterday my Avensis decided to start making an awful grinding / rubbing noise from the front drivers side wheel, the noise is loudest when at lower speeds and tends to stop when braking, it also seems to stop when steering left but continues when steering right....

Any suggestions on what might be a possible cause?

Thanks.

Brake pads excessively worn.

In addition to the above -

Check the wheel nuts for tightness. Get a garage check the brake components are fine and secure. Make sure the hub nut and suspension are tight and secure too.

A loose or buckled brake shield could be the cuprit.

Im hoping to get it to the garage next week, but thought id ask if there was anything obvious before i do, as for worn brakes wouldn't it make a noise when i braked? Rather than stop when i brake?

Im fairly confident on the wheel nut tightness as i had a hell of a job removing them,

The pads are actually 'in contact' with the disc (ever so slightly) regardless if you apply the brakes. If there isn't any friction material left then the 'contact' is metal-on-metal. Hence a grating/scraping noise. The pads also have wear indicators - a metal strip which is designed to make an annoying scraping noise when the friction material gets too thin.

  • 1 month later...

Appologies for not responding to this thread, have had internet issues.... the problem has however been fixed. It was described to me by my mechanic as the locking pin that holds the bearing had snapped and therefore it was wobbling about....

The absolute cowboy that fixed it before obviously hadnt put it in properly... I swear considering the garage in question are supposedly qualified i think a 3 year old could do better!!!
