Help Strange Engine Issue

Im hoping someone might shed some light on my 2006 2.2d4d Rav 4 strange problem. When driving when the revs hits 2000rpm the air vent nearest the drivers window sounds as if its blowing air full blast (no air though). If you continue oushing the accelerator pedal the fan continues if you come off the gas it quietens so on and so forth with the accelarator. Had the car into the local Toyota dealer who admit there is a fault of which they assume is electrical but also admit they have never come across this before on a Rav4. Since then the symptoms have developed further and more worryingly into the engine hesitating under acceleration or cruising on the motorway and a lack of power above 3000rpm. In fact getting the car to rev past that is now a real struggle. Fuel consumption has dropped off to 30mpg and family who followed me up the motorway today noticed every time I put my foot down the car produced clouds of black smoke. The car has just recently had a new engine fitted due to the know problems with the 2AD engine and I have to say hasnt put a foot wrong. Any ideas would be appreciative as Im not sure that the dealer knows whats going on and typically the car is now out of warranty although the engine I beleive is still covered for upto 7 yrs etc.

Thanks

Engine is most certainly NOT covered for 7 years if "just been replaced" mate....you will have a year at the most, or the balance thereof from date of supply. Off to dealer I'm afraid.....really instilling confidence I sense.....?

Firstly the noise from the drivers side when accelerating, it is almost certain that the boot surrounding the steering shaft has been dislodged when the engine was swapped this leaves a hole right next to the turbo for the sound to enter the cabin.

Secondly the lack of power is most likely a loose intercooler hose, under load the hose slides off its coupling and allows boost to leak this gives a lack of power and creates a lot of black of smoke when accelerating, it can be difficult to spot as when the engine is not under load the hose slides back over its coupling, this will also add to the noise issue above.

The pipes around the heater are just like the old ship communication systems - if you make a noise in one end the noise will travel all around the pipes. Ask someone to listen into one of the others, you can only hear the one nearest to you.

Check all the hoses from the turbo to the intercooler and back. One of them has been left loose or has was never tightened and has blown off. Under acceleration not enough air is getting to the engine causing the lack of power and smoke. The heater inlet is near the air filter side of the engine and the sound will travel all around from there.

If you rev the engine in short blasts with the bonnet up you will probably hear the air leak. Getting to it to tighten the clip might be another matter.

EDIT - just read the post above! May be the steering boot but I can't see why they removed it. Just stop the leak and see if the noise goes away.

Under the current replacement policy..

Car still has balance of extended warranty until its seven years old Kev.. even if it has a replacement at say 4 1/2 years old..........

Effectively an engine has two warranties on a replacement.... The existing extended warranty up till seven years from date of registration..

Plus the usual 12 month Toyota parts warranty.....

If an engine was replaced at say 6 years and eleven months then the warranty would continue for 12 months from that date... Giving a total of seven years and eleven months.......

Unless of course the car goes over the 112,000 mile element of said warranty....

May be the steering boot but I can't see why they removed it.

They must have thought it was a turbo pipe   but got confused

Check for tie wraps and old chewing gum holding it together

FYI, if a part is replaced under warranty, it does not gain from a 12 month warranty in the same way as if the part was purchased.
