Best wishes, shcm, and many happy returns indeed. Looks like the weather has decided to help you get in the right frame of mind for a spot of swimming...

Many happy returns (whatever returns are).

"Return" - recurrence [of the happy event]. The phrase "many happy returns" has been in use since around 1700 to express the hope that the happy day would recur many times and thus implies a wish for a long life.

There we are, I have not much wit but can always be relied upon for the nerdy bit.

Thank you all very much indeed.

Stew - Thanks for the usual starting of the thread. Did you have a good break by the way?

Returns - Well I never new that. QI. There was me thinking happy returns was something to do with getting money back on your empties :).

Well, now I am a number that is both simultaneously a palindromic number and a happy number. It's very very unlikely this will ever happen to me again :).

We usually get the choice of taking either Good Friday or Easter Tuesday off, so naturally I took today. So what have I been up to? Messing with cars most of the day. Just no hope is there?:nerd:

Cheers :thumbsup::beer:

Happy Birthday Andy! - "HOPE" you are right, there is none if you spent all day on the motor. Have you enough water to swim in the garden yet? So, 22 eh? ;)

Well to give you a clue of his age (his profile says he was born in 1918)

But last year, and i quote "he reached his first non chem prime number" Why he can't just tell us like everyone else i have no Idea  Stew, and yes i googled non chem prime number, I now know his age but don't understand the "happy" number..and if you want to know what a happy number is see below

http://www.transum.org/software/sw/starter_of_the_day/starter_January25.asp and good luck!!

I thought I'd give you all the opportunity to exercise the little grey cells

It's quite easy really. The palindromic bit should be relatively OK. Then it has to be happy as well.

All the happy numbers below 500 are listed here:

http://en.wikipedia....ki/Happy_number

The next time it happens (both palindromic and happy) I would have to be 262 (I think)!

Mathematicians often claim every number is interesting and I was just wondering if that was the case. Maybe I just need more

Mathematicians clearly have too much spare time on their hands. :).

There's often a use for all of these number types, but to be honest, what use are "happy numbers?"

Maybe Davrav has a point with 101. That's the room whether they (and possibly me) should be put!
