Avensis Starter Problems

Hi,

I own a 04 Avensis t3s 1.8 and am having starting problems

I went to start it this morning and it just about turned over.It had been fine up to then but it had me worried about getting stranded somewhere so I disconnected the Battery and charged it.

However when I refitted it and tried to start it just gives one click and wont even turn over.

I'm thinking its the starter motor but before I replace it is it likely to be anything to do with removing the Battery ie the immobiliser.

I'm not much of a mechanic so any advice would be greatly appreciated,

You could check your Battery connections including the earth cables to the chassis and the cable connection to the starter.

I you turn on your headlights on main beam are they bright. do they dim much if you then press the horn. amongst things it coulld be beside batt connections is the Battery has had it . did you check the batttery voltage after trying to charge it.

I think the Battery is fine - its only 2 years old and was showing over 12 volts on the meter.

The headlamps also dont dim when trying to turn over.

If the batts ok and batt connections are to then its the starter or solenod side.

As you getting a Clicking sound then it sounds like the solenoid is connecting.

The lights wont dim if the only load extra to the lights is the solenoid. try the horn.

Turned out to be the starter after all

After many hours of sweating and swearing managed to remove starter from engine - bottom bolt was piece of cake - top one hiding

more or less below air filter hose - needed a mirror to find it!

Anyway following online instructions did a bench test to confirm it was definitely faulty.

Next had to decide whether to pay £180 for a new one or get it reconditioned for £40 - tough choice

Left it into local auto electric garage and 4 hours later had a shiny working starter.

Refitting was a lot easier than removal and I was once again mobile. :)
