Why can I pull away from a standing start in 2nd gear in my Toyota Auris but if I am slowing down below 10 mph, it will not allow me to select 2nd gear. This I found dangerous in the icy weather last winter and could cause problems on wet grass on parking fields at outdoor events. Has anyone got the same problem and if so can it be overcome?

I had the same problem but, apparently, there is not a lot that can be done about it.
