Had a few days in France last week in my Gen 2. A bit horrified at how much I spent on petrol, but could have been so much worse...

On one 40 mile run along the French coast (quiet roads but pretty hilly) was delighted to get an average of 83 mpg! And the weather was pretty cool at that.

Then on Sunday I was in a taxi in Birmingham. Really nice 56 plate Avenisis diesel with just 41k on the clock. He had his average fuel consumption display showing - 34 mpg!! I told him about my Toyota and he was all set to make me an offer there and then...

I bet he won't though! I tried telling my old colleagues and over 2 years not one took the plunge. When it comes down to it they just dont believe the figures.

The taxi at 34 mpg is about right for a diesel manual in town all day - not just an hour, but all day. A petrol will get about 31 mpg and a diesel auto about 27/28 mpg and a petrol auto about 23/25 mpg.

I used to get between about 48 and 52 mpg. So if they got a Prius (and it was reliable and lasted the course) then they'd cut their fuel bill by about 40%. When you consider about 30,000 miles pa at 34 mpg then they're spending a lot on diesel.

There are a fair number of Prius taxis round here, particularly in Cambridge and Swaffham. Most seem to be Gen IIs.

Possibly due to the high cost of fuel in Cambridge. The local Shell station has been charging 145.9 for a while now.

Do many of the taxis run on biodiesel? I would imagine there's a good black market for someone with their own little setup to supply a small taxi outfit.

Some do, some run red diesel (lots infact) but bio diesel knackers up the injectors and pumps on newer diesels. It also plays havoc with the particle filters.
