Well, I Never Knew That!

After a couple of little snippets of info recently posted (e.g. meaning of JWL, turning off pet sensors, etc) that some knew, some did not, but were of interest, either in a useful way or a bit of motoring trivia, how about a little game ....

Thought it might be a bit of fun to post a piece of info that you know about the RAV4, or maybe another vehicle, to which the reaction may be "Well, I never knew that!", or maybe the reaction is "Duh!" :)

Only rules .... only one snippet of trivia/info to be posted at a time and you have to wait until someone else has posted before posting another one :yes:

Let's see how it goes, anyway :thumbsup:

So, to get the ball rolling.......

"Did you know that the little arrow next to the petrol tank symbol on the bottom of the fuel gauge points to the side of the car the filler cap is found on?"

It's an urban legend that the fuel filler logo handle on other cars points to the side the filler nozzle is located. Tests showed there was only a 53% correlation.

TBH I can't think of any 'Easter Eggs' in my 2000 RAV4, except that it's seemingly prewired for a few features it didn't get, such as the Idle Up button, the rear 12V socket and illuminated ignition barrel.

Did he know pressing the "Start" button also Stopped the engine? :D

On a Auto RAV4 with keyless start/stop, if you want to stop the engine but keep the ignition on (for radio for example?) don't put the selector in Park :yes:

If you park the car and turn off the ignition, you can still operate the power windows for 45 seconds UNLESS you open a front door.

Gonna try that one :) I spot the window is closed AFTER I open the door (doh!)

Pressing the wee button on the drivers door stops all the other windows from opening.. This gives the opportunity to do unspeakable things and passengers can get no respite ....................................................

Joking ... Honest ... ;)

Not sure what i am supposed to do with this thread, however when i had my 4.2 vx i parked next to a lady with an identical model and she said she loved the car but wished it had a CD player, I was surprised that hers didn't have one as my multi disc player was under the frt passenger seat, when i looked at hers low and behold there it was, and she had owned the car 4yrs completely unaware that it existed :unsure: Stew

Can this be achieved in some way on the manual. so many times i want to do this but can't work out how.

You mean have power to the radio without ignition on?

Just turn the key to first click - ACC position.

Problem is with the keyless start/stop, Dave. No acc position as such, just on/off.

Way it works with my auto is:

ALL OFF -

Press start with brake depressed and in Park.... System on, car starts

Press start without brake depressed ... Like first position with a key.

Press star again without brake ... Like second position

Press start AGAIN without brake ... All off

Engine running:

In Park and Press start ... All off

NOT in Park and press start ... Like moving to second position with a key

And can only turn engine off when in Park UNLESS you keep the button down for a few seconds (bit like forcing a PC to power down)

nominally no, but with a small amount of hacking it looks like it is possible :angel:

Engine;

The engine management system will work so hard to maintain idle speed that you can slow down on the steepest of hills and it will keep the car going at idle speed.

The engine can sense excessive soot in the oil and pre-empt an oil change quicker than normal.

Clutch;

The pressure plate is a special "fixed stroke" design. It will maintain the wear limits within two points on the stroke so a switch can be employed for starting at the bottom and hill start control at the top.

Gearbox;

Apart from having triple synchros on 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears, there is a synchro on reverse. You can drop it into reverse while still moving forward without it crunching gears!

Brake;

The system can sense an emergency brake application by the speed the pedal is pressed. During this time the ABS pump can boost system pressure by up to 100% so even a little old lady can stop a fully loaded RAV with minimal effort.

Steering;

The ECU uses a strain guage on the column to measure twist and vary the amount of assistance. It also uses speed inputs from the wheels to improve the feel at higher speeds. In the event of a skid it will encourage the driver to turn the correct way to reduce the skid and stiffen up and resist a turn that will make the situation worse.

Rear axle.

The drive to the rear axle is achieved through a multi-plate clutch on the nose of the rear axle. It is constantly and steplessly making adjustments to the drive mix up to a maximum of 55:45 when fully engaged to 100% FWD when cruising/coasting.

General;

The RAV has no less than 9 radiators/heat exchangers.

1 Coolant

2 Intercooler

3 Condenser radiator (A/C)

The above are all in a sandwich behind the grille.

4 Fuel cooler (under the drivers side floor)

5 Oil cooler

6 EGR cooler

7 PTC heater radiator (electric radiator in the heater on diesels)

8 Evaporator (cools the interior (A/C0

9 Heater radiator

Early T180s had a glass breakage sensor in the alarm system. The alarm sounder will continue to sound on back-up batteries even if the wires to it are cut.

The airbags are smart and will reduce in size the closer the seats are moved to the dashboard. The passenger bag and side curtains will not deploy if the seat is not occupied to improve vision and save repair costs.

The sunroof (where fitted!!!) will only retract automatically to about 80% to reduce the chance of body pulsing. It has to be fully opened manually the rest of the way.

Many hollow parts of the body frame are filled with solid foam to increase rigidity. All vulnerable panels are galvanised before painting.

The windscreen has an acoustic middle layer to reduce external noise transmission.

The mirror glasses have an anti beading coating to improve vision.

Options for colder markets include a heated windscreen (under the wipers) and a powered combustion heater.

The US version has a third seat row option and is a foot longer in the rear door and quarter glass.

9 Rads!! I meant to post a question about radiators when I noticed 4 of them while fitting my DRLs - came up with general coolant, oil intercooler and A/C but lost after that point - do any cars have 10 or more rads?
