Check Engine Vsc

I am new to this so please bear with me..... My Check Engine light and VSC light came on just as I was to have my 2003 Highlander serviced. They reset it and 2 weeks later they lit up again....Went to the dealer and he said that "the gas cap was loose and that it would be a minimum of $40.00 to reset...." I left it on trying to find out how to reset it....It went out....Again a gas attendent left the cap loose and they are now on....I know enough about computers to know that there has to be another way to reset this pain in the neck situsation. My question is HOW?
