3D Tv...gimmick Or Great?

Considering upgrading my 40" lcd to at least a 46" and was wondering about whether or not to go for 3D? I have never watched anything apart from a quick look at Shrek 3D in a Currys store...so have not really experienced it.

I like the idea of Smart TV, but wonder if 3d is a costly gimmick that 2 adults would get sick of (no kids in the house)?

What are your experiences? Is it better to ignore 3d and invest in a better spec 2d?

Cheers

Like you I have seen them in store and they look great!

My concerns are:

Wearing the 3D glasses, no thanks

How reliable are they?

Is there that much 3D content yet?

My 2D HD is just fine

Kingo

I can just see you standing outside Radio Rentals watching the tube each night before going home to your cardboard box...

They gave me a headache...

Plus wearing glasses OVER my glasses? No TV show will be entertaining enough to overcome the annoyance and discomfort of that!

For theme park special effect shows it's 10 minutes of great fun, but the films I've seen in 3D were underwhelming. One problem is that the system/glasses mean you lose half the light, so everything looks a bit dull (as you get older you need more light to see, so younger people may not have a problem with this). And most of the time things are more than a few feet away from you so there isn't much 3D to see anyway.

So I won't bother with 3D until it is 'glasses-free', cheap and you pretty much can't get 2D. The brain is an amazing thing and if you chuck 'odd' at it for more than a few minutes it adapts. eg. most people can watch a black & white film without really noticing once they get into it - their mind fills in the depth and colour anyway.

Wait till glasses free 3D TV are relatively cheap enough. Although 3D TV's are cheap enough now, you will find that 99% of the time you will watch in 2D. Plus you will need a 3D blue ray to buy extra, whereas for the moment you could either connect your laptop up or use your current DVD player.

USB memory sticks and HDD`s can be used to play 3d content in many formats (Mpeg,AVI, MKV etc.....) Download form the inter web for 3 :lol2:

Glass`s free TV some time away I should think....I needed to upgrade a JVC CRT anolouge TV so had to buy.....Smart TV is quite cool but in its infancy
