2.0 Diesel Startup Noises...

in the last month my T-Spirit has now twice done this...

startup as normal after being on drive all night and the engine makes a sound for maybe a second or two - certainly no more that sounds quite 'metally' and screechy... more so than a slipping fan belt kind of screech.

the engine 'hunts' for the same second or two... and then starts running fine and doesnt miss a beat.

For the duration of the 'screech' and 'hunting' the orange engine light remains on, but as soon as the engines picks up and starts ticking over fine the light goes out and everything is fine.

happened once before it's 80,000 service and once just after it.

anyone had similar? oil levels etc were checked and are fine

I had this exact same noise only happens when I dont drive the car for over a day or two in rainy weather moisture maybe making the belt slip. Dont get no engine light though.

Sounds like time for new alternator belt? As long as there is no chain rattle at start up nothing serious to worry about.

either metal / hammering sound means an over fueling (poor injection) when cold started. the sound is disappeared after a while. in details --- the diesel engime nature is to ignite diesel by means of compressed air rised temp. when ignited the ballance between diesel cycle portion and an air is in favour of diesel poured giving such noise. when it happens you must be ready to check with all injectors jet + calibrate it on the fuel stand.
