Tailgate Opening/closing Issues

Hi all,

My wife's 04 1.8 vvti squeaks quite bad when opening and closing the tailgate and it is a very harsh close. I think the squeaking is one of the gas struts as the lid does not open all the way and is quite heavy so I want to replace these. 2 questions,

1. Where can I buy new gas struts rather than Toyota?

2. Any ideas about the harsh close? You really have to slam it closed to avoid the light staying on on the dash and there is no give when it closes. It's like it is closing onto something very hard?

Many thanks

Ian

Try a spray of linthium grease on the hinges and boot lock mite ease your boot problem

Does the tailgate stay up by itself once lifted? If so then first check the hinges and strut mountings are moving freely. Usually (although my knowledge isn't specific to an Avensis here) if only one strut is faulty then the tailgate is too heavy for the other one and therefore you need to prop/hold the lid open. If yours is staying up then it could be stiff hinges, which could also explain the creak, and possibly the harsh closing.

Try eBay or an auto breakers for struts.

The boot is locked closed by a similar method to a door. ie there's a pin at one side and a closing hook at the other. One end is adjustable, I think it's the car end rather than the bootlid end. Slacked the bolts/hex/whatever they are and move the pin right/left/out/in until you get it right. It'll take you two minutes. If you're unsure of making it worse then mark exactly where the pin is before you start.

Hope this helps :)
