Handbrake Control System

I have a 2009 Avensis Tourer, bought new and now two weeks out of warranty. Driving over a cattle grid a few days ago a warning light came on and messages appeared saying that the handbrake control system needs checking and the stability control system also needs checking. The engine light also appeared at the same moment.

I took it to the Toyota dealer who connected the computer and announced that I needed a new handbrake actuator (£1270) and that a further 3 hours of investigation were necessary to find out why the engine light had come on (£234), but it might be a mass airflow range problem. Bear in mind that there is no problem in using the electronic hand brake or anything else for that matter. This diagnostic cost £54.

I was not happy with the diagnosis (or price) and took the car to an independent Toyota specialist. He checked the car out and reset everything. the lights went out and I drove away. 20 miles later the lights came back on.

Over the weekend I continued driving the car and on Sunday morning the lights went out. By Sunday evening they were back on again.

Has anyone had this problem? Please help if you can!

Hi,

I had my parking brake actuator and controler replaced on my early 2010 Tourer, because it made a terribly grinding noise.

It did this from new, and gradually becoming worse to an extent that something was about to snap soon.

Knowing how expensive this repair is, I recently took it to the Toyota dealer, who compared the sound to a new Avensis in the showroom.

Without further discussion new parts were ordered.

Mine now sounds like the one in the showroom. :)

It's a known problem in some series of Avensis'.

Hi .just to give you some insight into the system operation .when a fault is triggerd in the engine system ,the vsc and epb automatically come on as well as the engine light altough the fault lies in the engine ecm .if you had a fault in your epb only you would have only your epb warning.i would instruct your dealer to solve your air mass issue first. The epb may have a fault code in it but it didnt trigger your warnings if your eml is on.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll mention the engine fault triggering the handbrake light to the dealer.

Cheers,
