Does anyone know what the approximate cost of replacing a clutc on a RAV4 2006 please.

Chap at garage says whole engine needs to come out. Is this correct ?

AFAIK, yes the engine does need to come out.

Are we talking Toyota or independent garage Tim?

£500 to a £1000 depending on garage or dealer.

It's my neighbour who has had it done at a local garage, not a Toyota garage. He's been charged £2500.00 ! and was told the engine had to come out.

I am a good mechanic myself, restore old motorbikes, and I'll be buggered if I can see anything disturbed inside the engine conpartment to suggest it's been taken out. Hose clips still dusty with no marks on the rubbers, all still dusty. Engine mounting bolts with no sign of movement + dusty. Turbo bolts and radiator fixings dusty. I could go on, but unless there is some magic way of getting that engine out with not disturbing auxillary bolt- ons, then I'm not a magician !! He's retired and doen't know jack about engines. I think he's been done one right up the jacker.

Any comments from you all ?

I think it can be done with the engine in place but it is a huge heavy lump of a box and easier with the engine out. It amazes me how people just spend money like that without seeing what others would charge, and the call dealers stealers!!!

He has been well and truly humped, Tim....best course of action is tell him that was about the right price, or you'll have him scratching his wrists with a Stanley knife. Name and shame the rip off bgrs on here though.....?

They have done nowt illegal, but should be shot with a ball of their own bowel output. Contrary to some people on here who have an unhealthy attitude to dealers, at least they would have done this under fixed service and repair schedules....maybe....?

Hi Kev,

You are right in everything you say.

All I was wondering is that they quoted him 2.5K at first as the engine had to come out. When he went down to get it he just gave them a cheque for the 2.5K. I'm !Removed! sure the engin 'aint been out, so, if it hasn't and they managed to do it in situ' then it should not be 2.5K, alot less I would think. That's why I asked if it needs to come out, if not then he should be due a significant refund. I'll go down with him as he is very fragile and wouldn't know how to argu the point.

Regards,

Tim.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is a DMF ?

Dual Mass Fly-wheel. When I first saw your post I wondered if the DMF had been replaced aswell. Even if it has, surely it would still be South of £2000? did he see any old parts or invoices for parts etc?

If you can find out exactly what got changed. If you could see an itemised bill that would prob be good. Might also be worth calling a local Toyota dealer to see what a clutch change costs. They should be able to give an accurate estimate.

Has he got some warranty with the work done?

Good Luck Tim, and power to yer elbow / tonsils in what you are trying to do. He was quoted a price, accepted it, payed it.....you can only rely on the fact the sh*** have a conscience.

Important though that you know what was replaced as Davrav and DomP are suggesting....they could hide behind having done the DMF, IF THAT IS WHAT THEY TOLD HIM NEEDED DONE, but they are still OTT on price.

A wee threat that you would involve Trading Standards in writing may well get their attention if they get shirtyish.....?

Cost for clutch at a Toyota Dealer including Genuine parts circa 1100 +VAT. could be done for around 3 to 350 less by an independant garage.. If the 2006 car in question is a 4.3 its very very unlikely indeed that the DMF would need replacing...

£2500 Is just daylight robbery..

I cant see anywhere above that says if its a 2.0 Diesel or a 2.2 or any indication of 4.2 or 4.3 or even if its a petrol....

Great mention is made of no signs of the engine having been removed.. How about signs of the gearbox either having been removed or split from the engine block ??

Ones things for sure if that were My granddad said garage owner would be extracting a large pry bar from from his ... What was the word ? "jacker"

2 local garages wanted one £950 / another £985 something to do with engine left in or out and labour time clutch doctors quoted £900 all in, so opted for my trade option.

Surely with a 2WD Its just a case of dropping out the box ?? With the 4WD cars its a completely different matter all together !

Dealer fitted My clutch free of charge labour wise as the engine was getting replaced so no extra labour warranted or charged..

Cost to do at a later date was 1150 +Vat. Parts were 280 so it was for Me easily worth spending that amount for the peace of mind..

Good to see a Toyota Dealer beating the independent garages though..

Mate,, Confused.. On the other thread it says Your car had the box out for near 500 quids worth of bearing replacements.. Yet still they charged 750 to do the clutch ??????????

Quote..

But it was the gearbox bearings all (3) replaced (£493.51) car now sounds a dream i can even turn the radio down, Clutch was down to the rivets, thrust bearing nearly pretty evenly worn to max, cover forks badly scored all (3) parts replaced by toyota (Coventry) they collected car at 735am precisely both jobs completed car bought back to my home at 530pm today, car valeted, total vehicle safety check done with report (£791.49) enough said, both jobs were inclusive or parts/labour/Vat

All old parts returned.

Unquote...

A full Visual health check can be done at any Toyota Dealer on any Toyota free of charge. This include a Valet....
