Hi

although i like my toyota avensis its on a 59 plate and its never given me any problems

today i parked by my local shop only to turn round and see it rolling down the road

the damage is quiet extensive with all the front end not looking to prity at the moment ,

i have read on other forums ppl have experienced a hand brake failure , is this something ppl should be aware of ,also what i cant understand and i may be wrong should the air bag have inflated even though the car was locked with no one inside ???

Hi & welcome :)

I guess this is a T27 with the electronic handbrake? If so it's not unknown although I only seem to remember it being mentioned with regard to earlyish ones.

As for the airbag certainly passenger seats have sensors to detect weight or not on the seat & avoid airbags deploying when not occupied so I imagine that driver's seats probably have the same.

P.S. you really should have asked the questions in the Avensis forum ;)

It is not uncommon for handbrakes to fail when parked up. There are numeorus reasons such as change of temperature, etc, that's why the highway codes recommends puuting the car in gear (park if an automatic) and if possible turning the fornt wheels towards a kerb if adjacent.

The air bag sytem (SRS) activator will work on the basis of an accelerometer or an impact sensor so if neither of the limits set by these sensors ecceeds the set values then the system will not activate.

I know of one case where a modern car rolled own a 200 yard steep slope when it went through a road-side fence and yes you guessed the air-bags didn't activate.
