Apple Under Investigation By The Asa Over Ipad 4G Claims

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is investigating new complaints that Apple is still marketing the new iPad as a 4G device, even though it will be incompatible with 4G networks in the UK.

In a statement, the ASA told Wired.co.uk that it had initially "responded to 40 complaints about claims for the iPad with Wi-Fi and 4G that appeared on Apple's UK website".

The complainants said that Apple's references to 4G were misleading, because the next-generation mobile web network is not yet available in the UK, and the current iPad will not be compatible with any 4G networks that might be introduced in the future.

That's true. When Wired.co.uk was researching its guide to the new iPad's 4G, an Everything Everywhere spokesperson said "Everything Everywhere will be in a position to roll out a 4G LTE network in the UK by the end of this year for Orange and T-Mobile customers, albeit not for this iPad, [because it] only works on the 700MHz and 2,100 Mhz spectrum bands."

If you've got a new iPad, you'll only be able to use the 4G if you travel to North America or Canada.

"When we approached Apple with the concerns that had been raised, it stated it had removed references to 4G from the webpage that was subject to the complaints," the ASA statement says. "Apple also agreed to edit a video that contained references to 4G." With the issues resolved, the ASA informally closed the case.

"We have since been contacted by several complainants who have identified other potentially problematic claims about the iPad and 4G on Apple's website.

We are currently assessing these new complaints."

Apple had a similar scuffle with advertising watchdogs in Australia.

The new iPad cannot connect to the 4G network provided by Australian telecoms firm Telstra, because it uses a different part of the spectrum.

Apple now says "It is not compatible with current Australian 4G LTE networks and WiMAX networks," on the iPad section of its online store.

I heard that Apple are set to become the worlds first Trillion Dollar Company :jawdrop:

FORBES

"Let the countdown begin: Analysts are now saying that Apple shares could reach $1,000 within the next two years — up from about $630 today — as it continues to win over mobile buyers with the iPhone and iPad.

Yesterday, Brian White at Topeka Capital Markets, arguing that Apple’s shares are undervalued relative to the company’s earnings potential, put a $1,001 12-month price target on Apple’s shares on continued demand for its mobile devices, expansion into China and the possible release of an interactive television. Katy Huberty, of Morgan Stanley, told me yesterday the $1,000 price target is “realistic,” with her enthusiasm based in large part on Apple’s opportunity to expand in China where sales went from almost nothing to $12 billion in two years.

Today, Gene Munster, of Piper Jaffray, said the discussion about a $1,000 share price (or more) is “nothing new to the Apple story” and said Apple is on track to become the first public company to have a trillion dollar market capitalization. That would top the current record for a publicly traded company — the $619 billion in value reached at one point by Microsoft."

It's all the fan boys with more money than sense getting locked into technology they can't control or sometimes own...

Companies like Apple will always do well when there are enough sheep to fleece.
