1999 Yaris Gls Rear Wiper Replacement (Japanese Built)

Hi, wondering if anyone can give me some advice please. I need to change the rear wiper on my 1999 Toyota Yaris GLS (Japanese build). The current blade has been in place 12 years and is pretty much useless now. Some research has suggested I can't buy just a replacement blade but need a whole new arm due to the design. Replacement blades are only available for French built cars but the arms + blade for Japanese cars are only £10 on eBay. However, despite having removed the nut I can't get my old wiper arm to come off, seems corroded in place. Is there any other solution or am I due another expensive trip to the garage (seem to be spending about £600 a year recently so would greatly appreciate any help).

The arm will be fitted onto a tapered and splined shaft that comes out of the wiper motor, It will not turn clockwise or anti clockwise so i,d advise tilting the arm from the side the blade is fitted to and gently move it upwards and downwards to try and release the taper fit. I havent actually changed one before on a yaris but if you already have the new arm, and there is no way that it is coming off, you could try a small puller or if that isnt an option, try cutting into the edge of the arm with a small hacksaw where it sits against the taper bearing in mind that it is on a taper(dont cut the splined area of the wiper motor).

Something like this http://www.ebay.co.u...=item257012eab2 might be useful?

12 years! I change mine every twelve months. The rear window picks up lots more road muck than the front which tends to wear the rubber quite quickly.

The information you researched is incorrect, you do not need to replace the arm only the blade which can be purchased from Toyota for approx £5.

My personal experience is that the arm wears as well: the mounting points for the blade wear and squeal occurs: With a 13 year old car, I personally would change the lot.

(Been done the route of blade change only - after 12 months changed the lot)

Thanks for the advice everyone, might see if I can get hold of one of the wiper removal tools, hopefully won't have to resort to a hacksaw.

Stantheman1 - out of interest where could I look for the blade only, haven't been able to find one anywhere?

The arm itself and especially the plastic hooks where the blade attaches look pretty perished - like they could break very soon, so I think a new arm may be better in the long run.

Does anyone know if a replacement French arm and blade would fit a Japanese built Yaris? If I was to fit a French arm I could then replace the blade only in future which would be easier.

Go to your Toyota dealers for the blade. Costs a few quid. They can price you up an arm as well if you feel it necessary. Personally I wouldnt bother but its up to you. If you're just changing the blade it's a faff but once you've done it once its easy. Line up the grooves/indents on one side.

Im sure French/Japanese arms/blades are not interchangeable.

If its just the rubber gone get a refill from mr t put washing up liquid all over your old rubber & blade then slide it out

(mind you dont break the clips either side) then slide your new rubber in with more liquid on it job done

GDB87- Same problem here, viper arm was broken, nothing could've held the blad in it, so i decided to take it off. Japanese makes indeed has this tapered shaft fitting in the arm. French is held together by a normal basic nut on a thread.
After long years my 1999 japanese yaris's rusted solid, i was only able to brake off this nut thing of the shaft and now it looks like as on the photo i attached.

French ones doesn't fit on it, but i'm just gonna make one fit, my mechanic will weld a nut on this shaft, put this new french arm on it after (it doesn't has a thread, nothing, check picture), then secure it with another nut from the outside. I actually let him choose which way does he want to do it. It will hold nicely.
I don't wanna buy a japanese one and waste my french one which cost a tenner aswell.

If you want to do it right just buy a tapered shaft japanese viper arm and put it on after cleaning rust off the thing.

Old thread, same problem.

I have a Yaris 1.3 -00 and am not sure whether it’s french or japanese but I have the same problem and my shaft looks exactly the same as in the picture. Suppose it’s japanese then.

I ordered an arm: Toyota part #852410D010 but the hole is too big so I suppose I should use the one with part no #8524152010?  Did’t know they were different so I had to modify it, took a piece of a plastic tube on the shaft to make it bigger. Well, it might work. For a while.

2000 is Japanese built

852441-52010 is the correct part - yes Japanese cars have many differences including brakes, engine, and gearbox
