What To Look For When Buying

Hi everyone,

I signed up a few weeks ago as we're thinking about replacing our Pug 207 with a Auris, and was looking for a bit of advice as to any problems or issues we should look out for when buying.

Whilst I'd like a diesel our current lump has highlighted the DPF/DMF issues, as well as troublesome turbos although I suspect that's specific to the PSA engine. Also we only cover around 8,000 miles a year, 2/3 of is around town so a petrol is looking like the most likely option.

We've seen a few 1.6 modles that we intend to look at but it would be good to go armed with some info so we know when to walk away!

Cheers

Pay special attention to steering, when turning it while stationery or parking speed, there should not be any clicking sound or knocking on the steering wheel.

Also check coolant level and ask if it consumed some.

Also check if front brakes make squeaking noise.

Those are the problems I had with mine 1.6.

I have had my auris 1.6 for over two years now and never had one bit of bother, i have been in the motor trade for more years than i care to remember and worked on all the top range of vehicle, Rolls / Range Rover etc but i find my Toyota Auris very reliable more than some makes of cars. On average the fuel consumption in town is around 35/37 MPG but on a long run can acheive 48/49 MPG. I find driving the Auris every day is as good as the first time. Stay clear of vehicles that have been got at and have had non factory Mods carried out. All in all it is a machine which can go wrong but i'am more than pleased with mine and would buy another hope this helps

Thanks for the replies folks, I'll keep an eye out for these.

We've been drawn to the Toyota brand by their reputation for reliability, so glad to get some 'real life' feedback!

We've seen a couple of Auris' nearby that we intend to look at so will keep you posted, might even become a regular :D

I have come from a focus turbo diesel to an auris SR 1.6. Like you I had no end of trouble with dpf and turbo,I would not touch a diesel again as it seems with all the emission, fuel hike that they want to try to phase them out.If you spend a lot of time driving in town the dpf won't regen and you can't seem to start it off doing so when you want it too.You probably know this already.

I have had the SR for just over a year and found it does exactly what is says on the tin,it returns some decent fuel figures and is comfortable to drive, not sporty or quick in any form.I have had absolutely nothing go wrong,no rattles, sqeakes etc,(touch wood)..It could be that it was an ex demo and checked over for noise because some people have rattles ect.I sometimes miss the turbo even after a year, but coming from Saab turbos to a turbo diesel to normally aspirated, you would, like I said none of the reviews or salesmen pretended it was quick just because it has an SR Badge. You can't have everything when you are on a budget, good luck.

Also check the boot carpet and underneath to check its not damp. The gaskets on the rear lights can go which leads to some water ingress but a modified gasket from Toyota is a simple fix.

Like the others I have a 1.6 sr and its very good, you may also be able to fit cruise control which I have and is a god send on long trips. My economy is 40mpg which I am very happy with considering I have a lead right foot!
