Odd Engine Issue

Hoping the collective wisdom of the forums can help with a strange issue that's materialized with the t180.

First occurrence was on Thursday, entering a 50 zone from a 30, put my foot down in third and noticed it didn't have the same oomph.

Then yesterday I turned a corner onto a hill, tried to accelerate in second and found again no oomph, this time noticing there wasn't the normal audible turbo whistle until around 3000rpm. Stopped at traffic lights and car was fine again.

This has now happened about four times since yesterday, each time trying to accelerate in 2nd/3rd, I've noticed that there isn't the normal turbo whistle and that if I let off the throttle for a couple seconds it's fine again (it's almost as if the car forgets it has the turbo to use!)

There's no codes showing up and the only other thing recently was a service and fuel filter change last Tuesday.

Any ideas would be great fully received.

Does that model / year have a MAF sensor ?

Fuel Filter.. Absolutely has to be....

My 4.3 had the same issue a couple of weeks ago and the fuel filter was the cause.

Identical symptoms on ours turned out to be EGR valve - just needed a good clean in line with the instructions on the forum. It is mentioned elsewhere, but make sure you clean around the base of the valve well (easiest if you remove the motor) so that there is no gap when the valve is closed.

Identical symptoms on ours turned out to be EGR valve - just needed a good clean in line with the instructions on the forum. It is mentioned elsewhere, but make sure you clean around the base of the valve well (easiest if you remove the motor) so that there is no gap when the valve is closed.

I should add I also cleaned the egr valve first. It didn't cure the problem however the engine does run sweeter thanks to it.

Fuel filter changed "last Tuesday" as original poster stated....that's what happens when ye drink whisky (supposedly) older than 8-10 years.

True. He whisky was good tho!!

If the tank has been run down to nearly empty like I did then any crud in the tank has less liquid to swirl about in and hence more will get pulled through. A new filter would last no time if the tank was very dirty and loads of crud was pulled through the system.

Egr valve is the other obvious one.

If the tank has been run down to nearly empty like I did then any crud in the tank has less liquid to swirl about in and hence more will get pulled through. A new filter would last no time if the tank was very dirty and loads of crud was pulled through the system.

Egr valve is the other obvious one.

As was explained by that ageing expert in friction materials and their modern day applications, THE ACTUAL FEED PIPE EMANATES FROM THE BASE OF THE FUEL TANK ANYWAY, thus gradually and regularly removing any accrued crud as one goes through one's daily grind, as it were. There should therefore be very little chance of a sudden and catastrophic ingestion of said crud into the fuel system, resulting in failure/symptoms of the nature the OP has reported on, and almost certainly not blocking a fuel filter of only one week's vintage.

Elly (!)... I disagree!

Would it not be fair to say that as your driving aboot the place, the crud will swirl about hence less will be pulled through.. If the tank is nearly empty, there is less liquid for the crud to swirl about in and hence is a lot more concentrate, HENCE more will be pulled through when the tank is empty...

Rightly or wrongly, both times my car did this was when I let the tank go right down to only a couple of litres. The second time was obviously a lot worse and i had to change the filter.. So in my mind there is a correlation! No?

And yes, the whisky was more than 10 years old. the date on the bottle was when the distillery was established!!! (It does say that on it - ya numptie!!!)

The fuel pickup pump should have a strainer on it anyway, maybe its fallen off.....the big tea bag thing?

Thanks for the responses guys.

In respect of fuelling, i always try refill at half a tank, if i ever broker that tradition it would have been about a year ago so im hoping it has no correlation to the new fuel filter.

Didn't think about the egr valve as didn't realise how time had flown, was about 18 months ago when it was last cleaned......

I'll try and fit in a cleaning session when i get back from london sunday (good excuse for a motorway thrash clear-out as well) and hopefully have some positive feedback :thumbsup:

Wibbers. Have you never heard the turmoil taking place inside that tank when you pull up somewhere? There are no concentrations of contamination in your tank unless you have left the cap off while washing. It could pick up the water or dirt when starting from still in a morning.
