Auris Hybrid T4

I'm in my 3rd week of owning my 1st Auris Hybrid T4 and like a few people am struggling to get a decent MPG.

The first tank averaged 48mpg, which i assumed may have been due to me getting used to it. I am now on my second tank of fuel and am averaging 52mpg,

The journey i am doing is mostly dual carriageway and try to keep my speed around 60mph.

Saying that i have noticed a couple of unusual issues and wondered if these are normal or could be connected with why I'm not getting a decent MPG from the car.

Could anyone confirm if they have seen these issues and if they are normal.

1) When starting the car after it has been left over night or at end of work to drive home the car starts on electric (there is plenty of charge in the Hybrid battery) but with in approx 10 seconds the petrol engine will automatically switch in and override the electric, plus the engine sounds like the choke is at maximum as it seems to rev quite fast. When in this mode and driving about 30mph the instant mpg is about 35mpg until it seems the engine has warmed up. If I try to switch to Ev mode I get the message "Ev mode unavailable".

2) On several occasions when travelling between 20 - 25mph and switch to Ev mode I get the "Excessive speed" message and it wont switch over even though my speed is below 30mph.

Thanks in advance for any help.

In the morning the petrol engine will start so that it can supply hot water to the heater, so that's normal.

In EV mode you have to be very light on the throttle or the engine will cut in and cancel it, I tend to keep it in Eco mode all the time, which lets it run on Battery as often as possible and will hold 40mph plus with care.

Outside temp will play a big part in the economy, mid to high 50's is not bad in the cold.

Keep an eye on the economy gauge, never let the needle go into the power section for the best economy.

All that is normal. From cold, if you want the engine to shut off as soon as possible then select ECO and turn off the heating system - you can put it back on when the engine has a couple of bars in its temperature gauge - assuming you've not frozen by then!

The whole car will be very tight and needs to loosen up, don't panic it will come to you. Get used to the car first and then search for driving techniques to help minimise your consumption.

I meant to say have a look around fuelly.com for other Auris HSD consumption figures, and while you're there sign up and post your own!

In my Auris it does exactly as yours does, no problems there

I average 55 MPG and to be honest, I don't really try that hard, I could do better. You have a brand new car that will need to settle down, you will get better MPG but the main problem at this moment in time is the cooler outside ambient temperatures. On warmer days you will be able to use the Battery mode more easily
