Diesel Leak

Hi guys,

Im just after a little advice. I noticed a smell of diesel in the car earlier today so when i popped the bonnet and had a look i could see a puddle of diesel, having traced the wet patches i found where i think it was coming from, i can also see a drip when the engine is running... the problem is its too dark to take the cover off and im struggling to see by torch light. I just wondered if anyone can shed some light on what the leak is coming from and how costly or easy it will be to fix.

Here is an image from the avensis workshop manual with the part coloured red.

hi matey

please arrange for a good photos.

be aware from drive unless you find the spot of leak/s. Please note in case the leak is under the valves cover -- you have a risk to dilute an oil by diesel and finally to destroy all bearings/crankshaft !!!! Most probably this leak can be cured by re-tighting of pipe/s connections having well positioning them. Check and come back / regards Igor

Hi Igor,

Thanks for the reply,

Ive had a look today and its leaking quite bad, its coming from the fuel injector pump. Ive tried to tighten the 17mm nut on the right hand side of the pump and it has just made the leak worse. It actually seems to be squirting from between the nut and the silver pipe going up to the top of the engine.

I booked it into the garage, unfortunately they cant tow it so im going to have to drive it..... hopefully it will get there in one piece.

this vertical pipe is presumed to connect the rail. what was the reason of this nut loose ? but sometimes each part lives by own life. in worse case they will change this pipe . all injection parts are normally connected with each other by cone between both. no any gaskets between them (i meant HP lines). what about photos???? may be our advice will safe your pocket ?

regards / Igor

Hello, I agree with Igor it will be an injection pipe fractured, the pipe end is flared behind the nut and this is where they break due to vibration etc, It should only take 10 mins to replace but from a main dealers it won't be cheap. As the exhaust/turbo is at the back of the diesel engine and the fuel pipe at the front you should be safe enough driving a short distance to the garage, if it was a petrol engine I wouldn't even start it again.

Pete.
