Tyre Wear On Near Side

Just wondering if anyone is seeing tyre wear on the outer edge of the tyre on the front nearside?

The tread across the tyre is even its just the edge that seems to be wearing. I took the car to ATS to have the tracking tested and they say all is fine. They said this is normal due to the camber of the road and the stone etc that gather near the pavement etc. I have never seen this before on any car I have had previously. The rear tyre looks fine on the same side. Any ideas?

Your wheel alignment will be out, 100%. Maybe a bent steering component, which a proper geo will pick up.

Places like quick fit ATS etc, cannot do a proper 4 wheel alignment.....its very hard to find somewhere that actually knows what their doing, dealerships included.

Don't waist your money like I did on so called experts, dealerships with fancy machines, unless they actually know how to use them, which is not easy.

I was also told its normal, road Camber etc...what they are really saying is thanks for your coin, but we haven't got a clue.

Toyota dealers have got pretty good gear and they also know what can and can't be adjusted.

I wouldn't be too quick to condemn it. Shoulder wear is a recognised problem and there is provision in the law for it (you need 1.6mm for the central 75% and the outer two 12.5% only visible tread). It is because it is nigh on impossible to achieve even wear on wide profile tyres.

Make sure your tyres are not under inflated and it is one reason why rotating is recommended - so you can pick up on the unworn shoulders of the rear tyres.

If you have a depth gauge, just measure the depth in 4 places along the width on all front tyres and report back.

Thanks for the info. Tyres have been checked and are correctly inflated. Have checked the tyre depth and it even across the whole tyre (5mm), just the edge (about 20mm) that is worn. I will get the alignment checked again somewhere else. (I will check out the links) I will also think about rotating the tyres as this make complete sense. Good info thanks

Glad you asked this question as I'm down to 2mm on the outer edge of a couple of mine with 5mm on the inside edge . . . Funnily enough it is the rears on mine which suggests that 'someone' rotated them recently before I bought it.

And I wish I'd been more thorough when I bought it or I'd have had the dealer replace them :(

I remember my red one did it on Bridgestones. It caused me to have them changed prematurely (about 16k from memory). I think I would run them about 2.2-2.3 bar without fail.

I had all these problems with a golf....no car should wear tyres like that. A good wheel alignment center will sort it.

I heard all the stories under the sun.....after some expert help the car was like new.....

It has been know for big car manufactures to set up the geo wrong on there cars...... :yes:

Already running 2.2 bar on the tyres and its not that. Its under warranty from the main dealer so hopefully they can fix it. Its going in Friday so I will post a report of findings after this. I think that Jedi is correct and its the Geo that is out. Lets see what they say.

Some wear on the outer edge and especially the nearside is quite comman, it does not always mean the geometry is out, as AM says, the law actually allows for this as our wide profile tyres are very difficult to keep the wear rate even across the whole tyre. Just do a quick google search and see how popular outer edge wear is, and it's not all caused by dodgy tracking

The law says the legal minimum tread depth for cars and light trailers (including caravans) up to 3500 kgs gross vehicle weight and/or 8 seated passenger vehicles including driver is:

A minimum of 1.6mm in a continuous band throughout the central three-quarters of the tread width, throughout the whole of the circumference (see illustration below).

Of course that is not to say you do not have a problem, a full 4 wheel alignment check will at least give you peace of mind. Tracking is only part of the geometry setup and too many people try and adjust it with spoons and sticky backed plastic, in other words, for a quick check somebody can extract cash from you. Have a word with your local dealer and see what equipment they have for a full 4 wheel check

Hopefully your dealer can sort it, but I never had any luck with VW, they had all the computerised gear as I asked to see it, but no idea how to use it obviously.....as it took them 2 week and 4 dealerships apparently to find the left rear wheel has too much toe in.... :lol:

The Guy who ownes the wheels in motion site Tony bones helped me out with my Golfs problem the guys a genious on car geometry.......With his info we rang rings round VW and it just highlighted how incompitent they were...........and all the other so called wheel alignment specialists..........

You should get a before and after print out, ask for it, its yours............if its still not right, post the results on the WIM forum and someone will tell you where they have gone wrong and what they need to do to rectify the problem.

This is my ravs Geo print out.....it was pulling to the left slightly and the steering wheel has slightly off............

Just had the car at the Toyota dealer in Blackburn. They say that the alignment is fine, within tolerance. They then tried to sell me two new tyres, saying my tread depth is 3mm. I checked this myself with a depth gauge and the gauge read 5mm. They say they used a digital gauge. Would the reading be that different from my mechanical gauge? I feel that they are trying to make a few quid here as they have not had to do any work.

I am still concerned that there maybe an issue, although the dealer tells me that this is normal for a heavy car. Best to rotate them i think and maybe pay for a proper check as recommended.

I have a digital tyre depth gauge and also digital vernier calipers which I find more reliable. But just because a gauge is digital does not make it more accurate.

I hope the tyres aren't wearing on the edges of my wife's RAV - I don't think they are. I did have this problemon my landcruiser though and I had that from new and hadn't kerbed it - I think I just went too fast around roundabouts and corners in it!!

The Outer Edges on mine went. I had “Bluetooth” 4x4 tracking done at Selecta Tyres in Buxton.

At least they come and show you what the readings are on the TV before they say your tracking is OUT!

and then show you again once it has been adjusted.

On the posters in the showroom it says “Do your car tyres squeal on roundabouts” and

“does the car wander when driving in a straight line” and initially I thought it’s just <the spuds of lurrrrvve>s! to get you

to have the tracking done, but low and behold after having the tracking done it HAS fixed the Wandering

and Squealing of the tyres in the local supermarket car park.

After the surgery of removing my wallet it has made me more careful when negotiating speed bumps

and kerbs!

Does yours squeal or wander?????

Mate, that's just the classic crap I kept getting told, they obviously cant use the equipment.... Get yourself to a proper wheel alignment center, give dury a ring and explain to them the problem, and how the dealer thinks its ok...They will explain everything to you over the phone, they will 100% fix your problem, just out of interest did you get proof, ie print out, and how much did it cost you just out of interest.
