Hi all, Toyota have just advised that i need new front discs on my 08 Avensis. As i have recently just had new front pads they are suggesting they can 're skim' the new pads to fit their new discs! Anyway they want £190 to fit new discs. Is this a good price?

Thanks,Jerry

is this including the cost of the discs or just to fit them.?

Who fitted the pads for you, was it toyota? Why didnt they advise it when the pads were done?

Does your car stop? Are you confident with the feel of the brakes, just because the discs become "lipped" does not mean they are worn out. How did they measure the wear? Did they measure it? or was it just an informed guess by someone who has changed a few brake discs in their time and had a quick look, and in their experience they need changing(god i've got it on me today, must be that time of the month).

Undoubtely brake discs do not last like they used to but i think if the person that fitted your new pads didnt feel the need to advise you of the need for discs then your discs will last until the next time the pads need doing so long as you are happy with the stopping ability of the car. I didnt change my front discs until i hit 60000 miles. I bet toyota would of wanted to change them way before that.

£120 of that £190 is the price of the discs, so the labour is about right, taking into account the VAT

When is your m.o.t due? Unless you are experiencing a problem with your brakes I would wait until your next m.o.t. test is carried out and see if it passes. If you've recently had your pads done the discs should have been checked at the same time?????? If the garage that replaced your pads are now recommending discs I smell a rat....................... :disgust: Re skimming pads? Don't like that idea, new discs should always mean new pads in my book, sounds like they are desperate for work..................... :nono:

If the discs are just lipped you might be able to get away with it for a while UNLESS the discs are of minimum thickness now. The longer you leave these pads on though, the less likely you will be able to use them again when you do have new discs. If the discs are minimum thickness now, change them

Many thanks all. Brakes working fine, had second opinion and decided to leave discs until next MOT or pad change. Thanks for your help
