Look at the original Mini. That wasn't designed as a race car, just a family car for the average working class man. Because of peoples imagination it became a huge success on the race track and rally circuit, probably one off the most customised cars in the world, but never looked out of place in standard form where ever it was. If it hadn't been for those people, it would not have enjoyed the long production run it had virtually unchanged. Neither would BMW be having it's success now with the new Mini, because they would not have bought the brand.

But were are in a different century now and times have changed. I don't think the iQ would be a good race car unless it was racing against itself. Are we not meant to be saving the planet anyway.

No, when it comes to cars, people will always want to customise and personalise. Whether the alterations are necessary or not for everyday driving. It is just one step further from lowering springs and changing the wheels. I agree it's not to everyones taste, but the people doing it are doing it for there own taste and reasons.

Well you must go for it then. With the Greece fiasco, I'm saving my money.

The box George posted was an an Example of the type, not a recommendation..

I will post a picture of one that looks Factory when i am next at my Sprint car.

I am looking for a 'Heads Up Display' one that i can switch onto the screen when i want to see it.

george

Yes George, my whole reason for asking the question in the first place... oh no it wasn't. Seems like I stirred the pot a bit here. I asked the question as if you have the Auto/Multidrive then you have a 'what gear you are in display -be it D, R, S, etc-' so why can't I have one?

You are also right -whoever wrote it- that a driver should know instinctively what gear they are in, and I always do. I have been driving, safely, since 1979. Although, I did get hit once whilst driving an Izuzu Trooper in Riyadh at a roundabout, by a policeman in his own car, with 4 other cops sat in there with him. He paid for damage on the spot, one of the end caps of the rear bumper had a dent in it and he paid me far too much for the replacement cost. Spoke good English too.

My point in the question of wimsey above was, 'could it be displayed for a manual car in the same place as it is for the Auto/Multidrive?' David answered my question -I thought he would- and I'm happy with that.

However, I still would like to see a decent Head Up Display on the screen showing speed if nothing else. I hate being distracted by constantly having to look down in traffic so as not to get caught speeding or knock over some idiot more interested in their i-Phone than life itself.

I also have a morbid fear of paying the government (and I worked for them) more money for anything I don't need to. Being as they are so keen to take as much of one's hard earned dosh as possible as a motorist (or anything else); the less I have to hand out the better.

It's a shame some specialist manufacturer can't produce something for specific makes and models of car that doesn't look like it has been manufactured to go in a cereal packet and not on your dash looking like a bird just crapped it out of it's squirty *****.

Anyway, I'm happy knowing (I'm not really) that it's a no go on the gear change display. Anyway! Who wants another distraction on the dash... ?

David you surprise me, a man of your skills could do anything.

(granted, somethings are just not worth doing)

Bob, maybe not as a Standard Multidrive Gear Indicator, but if you want one thats simple, there are loads out there at all price points.

http://www.msar-safe...tail.asp?p=1117

Will require skills of someone like David to install.

george

Thanks for that George. Appreciate the link but as discussed later in this thread, yak. I'm not that keen on stuff stuck all over my dash for thieving B'stards to take because they didn't get enough love as a young'un or some other soppy crap that scum like them don't deserve. Right then. Thanks for trying.

You have to remember that most people who drive the multidrive, just put it in D and that's it for most of the time. It you did have a display on the dashboard of a nanual and depending if it were the 5 or 6 speed, it would be moving up and down the numbers like a yo yo. The manual does have an indicator to tell you when to change gear though.

Got that, cheers.

David,

ones like i posted are usually fitted when using a Sequential Gear shift.

Straight up or down shifting and with air shifters when maybe being used as quick shift or disabled drivers using hand/button shift controls only.

Motorbike engined kit cars etc to let you know where you are gear wise, at a glance.

I was just messing incase this was the type of display that Bob was thinking of as a novelty item at £100 or so..

It did cross my mind that with a manual you had better know which gear you have chosen or its time to give up driving.

george

For me at that price it would not be a novelty item. The thing about the question was that I wondered if the current display on my manual iQ could also show the gear position in the same spot in the display, and only because on my display (I think) nothing else is displayed there. Twas merely a muse, as opposed to a 'I gotta have one of them.' Apple-Ogies to anyone who got a little heated in there. Not my intention to cause/start any spats.

Whilst I do like a lively discussion, we are all friends on here, and it would be bad for me if I thought I'd caused a bit of a to do on here. I'm welling up now... :crybaby:

Bob, I don't think you need to worry. Marc and I were merely having an open debate :)

Yes just a good old healthy debate.
