2001 Toyota Avensis Ignition Problem

Hi - I have recently bought a 2001 Toyota Avensis and I'm having problems with the igntiion switch which is getting slowly worse. Basically I have a struggle getting the key to turn in the 'barrel' to move it to the ignition position. My wife has just spent half an hour in the supermarket car park trying to start the car and needless to say it's my fault! I suspect a new part is required but I'm not sure whether I need a complete assembly. Has anybody else experience similar problems and can give me some advice?
