I hate to be a bearer of bad news my friend but you appear to have the classic symptoms of an oli burning 1.8vvti engine.

This is a major issue with this power plant and realistically their is not much you can do about it except invest money for major engine work.

There are plenty of threads on this site hi lighting the problems you are experiencing.

Sorry, I know this is not the news you wanted to hear

I would not even consider taking it to a Toyota dealer..the cost would be stupid.

Only two options really,,, find a local garage or Independent Toyota specialists or sell it on again.

yeah with out letting the buyer know would be cheating ,iv asked a guy who makes engines locally if its a ring piston job it would cost around 6 to 700,might pop it around a toyota specialist which iv heard is quite expensive

thanx phill uv been very kind to respond

If you bought it from a dealer then take it back as there is a problem with the engine. Normally you get 30 days warranty from a dealer. You're pretty stuffed if you bought it privately except if you asked him about any problems or if it was using oil and they lied to you.

it was private all they said that because its a timing chain on it ul need to keep an eye on the oil .stuffed i am indeed

ok there is a local company who makes engines called svs in cardiff ,they are saying £600 plus vat ,i called an independent toyota specialist he is saying the only way it will work if we get the botton engine block from toyota and its gonna cost £1600 with a 12 month warranty ,and the main toyota dealer said its not a common problem just for diagnostics it will be 85+vat

so what u guys think i should do ?

plus im gonna talk to the private seller today if he would take it back or atleast give some money back

I thought these engines like the later diesels are covered under an extended warranty as the oil burning issue is a design fault that Toyota admit too.

the extended warranty is 7 years and this is 2004 model .they didn't admit on the phone at least .i'm sure the price they'l give will be a lot more higher

The problem that you are experiencing is indeed one that has it`s roots into a designe fault from Toyota(something related to a bad cooling and lubrication of the piston skirts, which under high engine speeds overheat and basically melt). Re-building the engine won`t eliminate the source of the problem, as the toyota specialist told you. To eliminate the source of the problem you need to change the "short block".

The toyota dealer is lieing, there is also a TSB about the 2003-2004 1.8vvt-i oil burning problem. The problem has been solved starting 2005 model.
