Manual Transmission Breather Question

I was checking my transmission oil level yesterday and noticed a slight hiss as I opened the fill hole.

Is it normal to expect as pressure difference inside the transmission or do I have a blocked breather ?

I notice that the breather looks easy to remove, anyone know if this contains a valve or is just a plane hole with a cap over it ?

Many Thanks

Ian

With a bit of intense Googling I think I have answered my own problem.

It seems that the breather is a one way valve that lets hot air out, then as the gearbox cools the pressure inside drops slightly.

Thus I guess when I opened the Transmission I heard some air rush in.

Supposedly it works this way so that air containing moisture is not drawn back into the gearbox.

It would also seem looking at the parts diagrams that all the various gearboxs and diff are fitted with this arrangement, but I suspect their small size and low air volume was why I only noticed the pressure difference on the transmission.

yes correct -- the pressure excess is normally relieved tru this check valve and it prevents moisture sucking in back once the oil got cooled. regards / Igor

You have to use photobucket as far as I know. The instructions are pinned in the tech section at the top of this page. I notice some photos come up as thumbnails that you can click on to make them bigger but I haven't fathomed out how to do that - anyone care to elaborate?

Now I'm with you. That is specially designed to let oil out rather than it get flug all over the place by the drive shaft. It could be the seal is worn or if they were a bit rough they could have clobbered it with the drive shaft. You could take it back and see what they say but you might struggle to get them to take responsibility.

For future ref', if you hovver over the photo in photobucket it will drop down some boxes. One of the says "Direct Link". Click on that and it will say "Copied". If you paste it into the little image option on the reply section of this forum (looks like a little green picture frame) the photo will be added to the post like this;

Thank you for you response do you if replacing the seal is a big job, and a costly one, it's going back to the shop tomorrow with the abs fault would rather get all done in one visit

The seal won't be expensive (maybe 5 or 10 quid) but there is quite a lot of labour. If you argue it didn't do it before the clutch was done they might do it you for a special rate.
