It's not a gas, it's a very fine spray; The goal is to get the spray so fine that it's practically a gas which is why they keep boosting up the pressure (PD and CR are in the 2000-2500bar range IIRC!) but even tho' the droplets are really microscopic, they're still huge compared to vaporized petrol which is why they want the diesel to burn faster and not slower...

That and the fact that petrol is mixed evenly with air when it is burned means it burns evenly and all at once, but with diesel the burn only happens where the fuel meets the air.
