Rav4.2 Binding Front Brake Thumping Sound.

Hi all

Sorry for the long post, but I'm after some ideas and wanted to give a full description.

Possibly due to lack of use, the RAV4 has developed a binding front brake on the passenger side.

Where the fault was discovered there was not the usual pull under braking or pulling to the left, but instead a clunking sound. It's a similar sound to something hitting a subframe to give you an idea of the timbre and location. I'd estimate once per revolution of the wheel.

I stopped and the brake stank and the passenger wheel only was very hot, and the passenger disc was blue and radiating heat.

Fast forward a week, the garage has tried to free the caliper over a few atempts, and on a run the caliper stuck again and began this unusual clunking.

Whilst this is a well worn (ha!) fix of a new caliper, discs and pads; my mechanic and I are confused by the clunking. I'm thinking it might be pad material on the disc from where it was stationary and hot. We wonder if there might be some other cause to make the caliper bind.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Are you saying these parts are new?

Bob min,

Is there any way there is a pad whose friction material has parted company with the backing....? Suppose that's the obvious, which would surely be seen on stripdown, but cannot thing what else would cause a thumping noise.....?

Only ever witnessed on a drum brake shoe on air cooled Beetle yonks ago.

Big Kev

I have the pads and discs ready, since it hasn't become unstuck I'm going to order a new caliper, but no they haven't been fitted yet.

I would guess at a distorted disc and the pads catch on every revolution.
