Help Rav4 Noisy Rear Brakes After Disc/pad Change?

Hi

Looking for a little advice please....

I've just done an all round disc/pad change on wife's Rav4.

Fronts were ok, back discs were hard to remove over brake shoes - but eventually got off after lots of blows with lump hammer.

However, now they're done they are a bit noisy at the rear, not horrendous but a little like a quiet version of a kid using a playing card to make noise on the spokes of a bike (if you remember that?).

I didn't change the brake shoes, just the discs and pads - should I have also done the shoes.

Any clues as to the noise, does that sound normal, is it possible I've missed something??

Any ideas welcomed.

Thanks

Mark.

Hi Mark

Is it one side or both sides?

It is usually better to change the shoes for the sole reason of getting them to bed in. As it is a static brake, bedding can take a very long time unless the profile is just about perfect. I wonder if something is catching on the inside of the hub. If you take the disc off the side which sounds worse and see if you can see any witness marks on any of the hold down clips or return springs. Something may have got bend in your fight to get the discs off.

It does seem to be both sides, but one is worse than the other.

I was thinking of putting of putting it back on the axle stands and taking discs off to have a root around to see if anything is obvious.

I think will do the shoes at the same time, as it seems logical to have it all fresh - don't know why I didn't in the first place!

It is possible that somehting may be out of place - because it was a real fight to get discs off - and I didn't know any tricks of the trade, other than giving it a severe whacking with a hammer!

Thanks

I removed my rear drums over the weekend to clean and lube the parking brake. Once I removed the calliper bracket the disks fell off no trouble at all. (first removal since new)

Out of interest I assume the parking brake was off, but did you also try winding back the parking brake to slacken off the pads. Maybe the pads were so close they were almost touching and you were forcing them past a lip in the internal drum ?

(I had adjusted the parking brake a couple of years ago to adjust the correct clearance maybe this helped)

Brake was off, so not sure why it was so hard to get them off.

I'm sure they will come off easily now as they've only just gone back on, so will remove to see if I bent anything in the process which may be making the noise.

I will order the shoes & fitting kit and give it a bash - I like a challenge!

Hopefully once they are replaced that will solve my problem :flowers:

  • 4 weeks later...

Just a quick update on this.

Problem is solved!

I took off the rear discs again and in my struggle to get them off in the first place I had stretched/bent one of the pins/spings that hold the brake shoes in place. This allowed them to move around inside the disc/drum and cause the noise.

All sorted now :flowers:

Thanks all

Mark
