Deadlocks - How Do They Work Internally?

One of my deadlocks is dying and the location of the lock means trouble if it dies deadlocked...

I understand how the lock motor drives the lock into the non deadlock position, but what happens internally during deadlocking to disconnect the internal handle cables from the lock? Is there some sort of cam? Repairable with a new motor/drive or is it a case of a new lock unit?
