Sound From Bonet

I have a Toyota Auris TR Automatic 1.6, 59REG I bought it when it had done 16k miles, under the Toyota used car warrenty from a Toyota dealer. Today, I took it just to get around the corner to co-ops and there was a horrible sound as if, there were 2 metal plates rubbed against each other and it went on untill I got to co-ops , I parked and opened the bonet to check if I could see something moving but couldnt see anything nor was the sound that audible, so realised the sound came only when I accelerated , wonder what this is any ideas?

You need to pin it down a bit more... and first thoughts are either a slipping drive belt (as alternator is heaviliy loaded after starting) or something like a stone caught between the brake pads and disc.

Does it vary with engine revs ? In other words is it different at say 30mph in 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th or is it constant and independent of revs.

Yeah the more you accelerate the worse the noise gets

So is it road speed or engine speed dependent ? It's an important distinction. You can accelerate by freewheeling down a hill. Would it make the noise then ?

If it is under a warranty then perhaps ask the dealer to take a look.
