i am in the process of removing the head of my avensis because of the usual trouble . i am having trouble removing the timing chain cover . i have all bolts etc removed but the case will not budge in the area of the oil pump . does the sump need to be removed before the case can be removed .

Ye the sump needs to come off as the strainer bolts into the side cover where the oil pump is located .there are modified pistons for correction of oil consumption which is the root cause of the issue due to carbon stamping .be sure to check the wear around the top of the cylinder wall mating surface with head and head itself for abnormal wear due to stamping affect
