Engine Idling

Hi everyone, just joined the site. I've recently bought a 1.8 pertrol (54 plate) Avensis and am rather surpised by the irregular and rather rought tickover. The car has done about 57,000 miles wiht service history.

I previously had a Nissan QX and you just couldn't feel the engine running on that. I assumed a fairly low mielage Toyota would be similar.

The dealer says it's OK, so maybe its' just a feature of this particular engine. Am I expecting too much?

Would be grateful ofr any comments.

If you are referring to the warm-up period then yes the idle is higher at the start then drops in stages as the engine warms up...this is normal

However, if you are referring to when the engine has fully warmed up, after 10 mins or so, then it could be something else but first it would be helpful if you clarified this, cheers

The idle speed isn't an issue, obvously it's faster starting from cold. The revs seem about right at 'hot' (c.650rpm) but it doesn't idle smoothly. For example; you can feel the vibration of the engine through the steering wheel and sometimes the driver's seat. Turning the aircon off doesn't seem to affect it.

To be honest it's not particualrly intrusive but not what I woudl have expected.

Thanks
