Remote Key

Any help appreciated.

My wifes 04, 4.2 Rav 4 came complete with 2 remote key fobs thet worked perfectly and probably still do , trouble is my daughter has lost 1 of them.

Mr T wants £170 +VAT for a programmed replacement which I think is very expensive.

I have found an eBay offer replacement for £60, then I would have to buy new Shell and blade (£3.00) and have it programmed.

Mr T very cagey if it can be programmed or not, wont commit but say £40 ish.

Local Auto Locksmith, seemed very knowlegable, said that they have 9 or 10 people every week going in with Keys bought off eBay and about 1 in 20 will programme, they charge £80 + VAT to try if it works or not. (Recommended main agent)

Has anyone had experience with replacements ?

Can anyone offer any advice ?

one thing I would check is if you happen to have key insurance - either on car or home policy - sometimes can have cover and not know about it!

Also, any danger that the key lost could be recovered and the car it goes with (ie yours!) identifiable? might have to consider a total system reprogram and barrel changes! :(

Checked insurances and not covered, damn

As to Identifying, I think very unlikely as I put the Electronic bit into a new Shell and blade about 6 weeks ago, this was from Flea Bay so no reference to Toyota (logo).

There was just this key and a yale key on a plain key ring

One place to get the electronics to be recoded could be from a scrappers maybe? could be worth a punt for a cheaper deal?

I think someone on the forum has just scrapped a similar age RAV4 to yours due to DMF failure .... might still have the keys for it?
