Radiator Fan Problem

The radiator fans are not working on my 1998 Avensis GS. Toyota advised to change thermo switch as my model doesn't have a fan switch. But it didn't solve the problem. Any ideas?

The first thing you should check is the motor itself. The wiring is easily accessible and running a direct feed from the Battery will confirm if the motor is working. The motors are poorly designed and the rotor brushes are somewhat flimsy and spares aren't available.

Replacement second hand units are the easiest way forward. See:

The fan on the off-side with the metal shroud is the Air-Con Fan. This works independently of the radiator fan. You should be able to check this the same way.

Both fans work as already checked. Could this be an electrics problem?

There is a relay that powers the fan(s), you can remove that and check whether it operates by putting 12 volts across the coil. You should hear it click and two of the contacts should close, - check with a multimeter.

While you have the relay unplugged, check that there is a 12 volt supply to the contacts, when the engine is hot.

You have obviously checked the fuses for the fans?

Where will I find the relay for the fans?

On my Avensis, which is a 2006 model, the relay is in a housing right at the front of the engine. You'll have to take off the engine cover, the long plastic strip right at the front and the terminal cover for the Battery. The relay housing is about 150mm longand 4 5mm wide at one end and 35mm wide at the other. The relay for the fans is the one on the right at the end.

Hope this helps.
