Bluetooth Upgrade

Hi,

I have an issue with the Built in bluetooth kit on a 2008 Avensis TR. I connects to the phone ok but the steering wheel controls are non operative, I know the steering wheel controls themselves are ok as they work fine with the radio and cd player. Also it doesnt mute the radio when recieving a call.

I checked on my phone and it seems the carkit is paired as a headset.

I read somewhere that modern smartphones try to pair as a smartphone (as opposed to just a phone) which older carkits dont understand, or don't have the profile for.

Also read that it's possible to upgrade/replace the bluetooth module in the carkit so that it has all the latest bluetooth profiles and will work properly with modern smartphones.

Any thoughts? is there such an upgrade available?

For referance I've tried a few different phones all of which had the same problem

Motorola RAZR (the new one)

Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte

Sony-Ericsson K750i

Nokia N86

Samsung S8500 Wave

Might be helpful to know what head unit you have and whether the bluetooth is aftermarket. As far as I was aware that model didn't have bluetooth as an option though I am happy to be corrected.

What does the phone say it is connected to?

First port of call would be to try pairing an old style phone and see how that performs with regard to muting etc. if it's ok then i'd suggest you're barking up the right tree about needing some sort of software upgrade. If not then i'd reckon there's a fault.

As a side note i have a parrot kit which did strange things when connected to a smartphone, however a software update completely cured it. I'd like to think a similar update would be possible on a factory fitted kit.
