Toyota Liteace Mystery Engine Noise

I have a 1992 Toyota Liteace 2.0L turbo diesel with a new  and intermittent mystery engine noise. It is a low pitch rumble, low down at the front end of the engine. The noise only occurs at idle and is not hugely loud. My feeling is it could be an idler or pulley bearing or possibly something to do with the viscous fan drive. The entire top-end of the engine was reconditioned about 3 months ago after the head was fried and I am fairly confident (he says optimistically) it is not too internal. Any ideas. please advise.

Frustrated, very part time, Toyota diesel mechanic. Neill

Try dropping the drive belts off Neill and see if the noise is still there - process of elimination i'm afraid.

If the noise goes, then it could be idler/tensioner bearing on its way out.

You should be able to check the "Viscous" coupling for wear with the drive belts off.

Whats the engine code of the Liteace - 2C-T ???
